Description

There's been a ride to the Three Floyds brewpub in Munster, IN, every January since 2006. The beer is great ("there are few places more exciting from a beer lover's perspective", says the NY Times), and the menu, like the beer, is unapologetically in your face with flavor you can't avoid.

Neither snow nor rain nor sleet nor gloom of night stays these couriers (and other riders) from the swift completion of their appointed rounds (of beer). We depart Daley Plaza at 8:00 AM and collect riders at Promontory Point at 8:45 AM. I like to get there before they open at 11 (it's still one of the top 100 brewers in the world, so sometimes there's a line). After we complete our rounds, we may be less swift, so there are different return options: 40 miles total if you ride to Flossmoor Station and take the Metra, 45 if you ride to 93rd and take the Metra or to 100th and take the J14, 50 if you ride to 71st and take the J14, 60 if you ride both ways.

The fine print: There is no support vehicle. You are responsible for yourself. The pace is 12-15 mph with a short break at Wolf Lake. January weather can be extreme. Be prepared for cold as well as flats/mechanical problems.

Checklist:
▢ Water and snacks to have en route
▢ Lights
▢ Lock
▢ Pump, tube, tools
▢ Extra layers of clothing (more than you expect to need)
▢ Money
▢ Government-issued ID
▢ Panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago

Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, Metra Electric train schedules, Jeffrey Jump (J14) bus schedule, Bikes on the Metra, Bikes on the Bus, and, to save a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver.

PS: This ride doubles as the First Step of the 2019 Twelve Steps Challenge. Ride to Three Floyds 12 months in a row and win an awesome prize!

the first is new since last time, the rest i highly recommend:

  • Absolute Gnar
    5.8% ABV 69 IBV $5 Tulip/5oz pour $2

"It's just like... Dude, you get the best barrels ever, dude. It's just like, you pull in, and you just get spit outem'. You just drop in, smack the lip... Waapah! Just drop down... Swoopah! And then after that you just drop in, ride the barrel and get pitted, so pitted" Absolute Gnar is a tangy, snappy lactose sour IPA with notes of pineapple, citrus and peach with a velvety smooth finish. Ride the Gnar Gnar!

  • Ghost Toe
    6.7% ABV 69 IBU $5 Tulip/5oz pour $2

A sour IPA brewed in honor of a brother’s amputated toe. This snappy, tart and fruity ale is brewed with new American hops Idaho 7 and Sabro. Forever haunting the sneaker.

  • Army of Hops
    7.3% ABV 83 IBU $5 Snifter/5oz pour $3

Part 2 in our Pig Destroyer beer series. This one is a lactose IPA. An unsettling and enthralling combination of a massive hop charge with the silky addition of milk sugar.

  • Permanent Funeral
    10.5% ABV 100 IBU $5 Snifter / 5oz pour $3

The wolf inside this pale ale is trying to walk upright. This bright and aromatic beer was brewed with our friends in the band Pig Destroyer.

  • Barrel-Aged Blot Out the Sun
    11.4% ABV 97 IBU $7 7 oz Perception

2018 BA Blot is aged in bourbon barrels.

  • Blot Out the Sun
    10.4% ABV 97 IBU $6 Snifter

“Since the dawn of time it has been mankind’s dream to blot out the sun.” – C. Montgomery Burns. Imperial Stout

  • Zombie Dust
    50 IBU 6.2% ABV $5 Imperial Pint / 5oz pour $2

This intensely hopped and gushing undead Pale Ale will be one's only respite after the zombie apocalypse. Created with our marvelous friends in the comic industry.

  • Alpha Klaus
    38 IBU 6% ABV $5 Snifter/ 5oz pour $3

Alpha King's festive cousin. A big American Xmas Porter brewed with English chocolate malt, Mexican sugar and, of course, tons of strange American hops.

  • Alpha King
    68 IBU 6.66% ABV $5 Imperial Pint / 5oz pour $2

A bold yet balanced American Pale Ale with slight caramel sweetness and aggressive citrus hoppiness. This is our flagship beer.
