The Chainlink

Maybe they have always been there and I just never noticed before but since Sheridan has been repaved I saw a few signs with a picture of a bike and a red circle with a line through it while I was riding. I'm not sure what that means, I think I would have noticed them before. This was in Glencoe north of Tower Road. Is it even legal to close a street to just bikes? The traffic is very light up there and it's a great place to ride other than the mysterious signs.

I believe this section is technically in Winnetka. The signs have been there since the 80s: http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/big-noise-in-winnetka-banned-b.... Only the "ravine" section is closed to bikes.

There's a winding, steep section of Sheridan bikes are not allowed. It's considered dangerous. I hear it's fun. :-)

Thanks, I guess I just never noticed the signs before today and assumed they were part of repaving. I've been through that way many times but have never seen a 'no bikes' sign at least that I noticed. The 'ravine' section is still a little bumpy but the rest of Sheridan is smooth finally.

Nope.  There have  been  signs there for decades. It was a big deal when the ravines were closed because they were fun to ride.  the  alt route up Old Green Bay Road had become so  ingrained  that it is like going to the bathroom in the middle of the night. No need to turn on the light. The path is well worn.

As Dave says, this goes back a LONG time. They may have new signage, but that's probably all that's changed.

The pavement in the ravines has gone to shit in the last 10 years anyway. You really wouldn't want to bike it unless you're on a mountain bike at this point.

I went riding up Sheridan and back for a few hours on Wednesday evening. On the way back to Evanston, I made a wrong turn and somehow ended up going north again and through the ravine. It was indeed fun :) The repaving is almost complete and the pavement is terrific form the south end of, I think, Winnetka all the way up to nearly Lake Cook Rd.

I don't know why that made me laugh so hard!   It means no bikes allowed. Need help with any other street signs?  The red ones with the letters STOP means stop ;)

The ravine there is pretty narrow with poor lines of sight. The detour's much more pleasant for riding, anyway, and a pack of Sunday riders down there would be a massacre waiting to happen.

Reminds me of when I was on Ridge in Evanston and a driver told me I couldn't be on that street. I laughed in disbelief, but then I saw a similar sign a little further down the road
