The Chainlink

Happy Friday Chainlinkers!

I'm finally able to get back into biking but am having a problem with my wrist.  Eliana (pictured below a few months back by Chainlinker Steven Gross and wearing a Kozey Prery hat of Erin Rensink) is 6 months old now and is at the point where I could go biking in the evening or at times during the day but I can't bike and am wondering if anyone has had this problem and what they did to heal.

I have what's called de quervain's tenosynovitis. It's also knicknamed mommy wrist or mommy thumb since it's common in new moms who have to pick up their babies a lot and use their hands in awkward positions breastfeeding, although anyone can get it if they use their thumbs a lot gardening, cooking, etc.

Acupuncture is helping (I'm going to a fellow Chainlinker Dr. David Kato), but I keep re-injuring it when I pick up Eliana in weird ways or hold her with my right hand and pick up something with my left.

I've heard some people get a shot and some have to have surgery.   I hope to not have to do that, but wondering if that may be what I have to do to get back on the bike.  I haven't biked since September of last year.....

I'm dying to start a new mom's bike ride as well as ride around with Eliana in the day (Kathy Schubert even got Eliana a bike helmet!)   HELP!

(Disclaimer- I do this for a living so please ignore.)

Sorry you're having this problem.

Assuming you've been properly diagnosed- Get yourself one of these from Walgreen's or Wal-Mart ($21-ish at Walgreen's, 14.94 at the evil place:)

Get this exact brace and no other-- it's really great....

And ice the bad spot 3x/day for 15 minutes.  Try to wear the brace pretty much always, and give it a good month at least before you decide whether it's helping; Injections and surgery are what you do when you've tried icing and immobilization for a good while with no benefit.

Regarding getting back on the bike-- do what you need to do to keep shock from going through the wrist while it's bent toward the thumb. Should be relatively easy to wear the brace and cycling gloves at the same time.

awwwwwwwwwww..........

You could ride a recumbent instead. There is no pressure on the wrist or thumb.
