The Chainlink

FYI -

Yesterday there was a whole lot of noisy excitement at Montrose Harbor.  It was a practice run for what’s supposed to be happening this Thursday (by the way, did you know that Montrose Ave will be closed for part of Thursday?).  The Chief is coming to Chicago again for a fund-raiser.  Four Boeing V-22 Osprey’s plus two presidential-like helicopters did a landing and take-off drill – including the obligatory black Secret Service Suburban SUV.  We don’t often see the Osprey around – it’s a Marine hybrid tilt-rotor long-range aircraft designed primarily for troop insertion and rescue operations.  Note in the pictures that all the boat-moving equipment was vacated from the Boaters Lot (which is still off limits to boaters!) and placed on Montrose Ave.

I saw those things fly by west of the loop yesterday and was wondering what they were doing there since there was no indication that the President was in town.  Thanks for clearing that up, and also for the heads up that there will be a traffic nightmare.

Any indication of LFP closures? When, for how much of the trail, etc.? Or is that just going to be our surprise tomorrow morning?

POTUS is in the city right now, came in yesterday for a dinner on Wrightwood. They want you to think it was a dry run ;)

If anyone here has a shortwave radio you can listen in on air force 1 chatter and more

I already waste enough time endlessly checking the Chainlink. :-)

He is coming in the afternoon.

One fundraiser lives in Old Town, so expect street closures around Lincoln park and Old Town, and likely LSD while he is escorted down there

I am not aware where the other fundraisers, the Polskys, live.

He is also supposed to stay in Chicago overnight.

i believe he is going to a dinner at dick durbin's house (lincoln square maybe) for one of those $35,000 a plate dinners

Right - the street closures are typically rolling and temporary, but IIRC they shut down LFP at Museum Campus heading south for an entire afternoon when he came downtown a couple months ago. I only go by Montrose on the LFP on my morning ride, so I'm wondering if they're planning on shutting it down for the day or if I might be able to slip under the dragnet.

One of the fundraisers is at the home of Fred Eychaner. He's on Wrightwood about a 1/2 block west of Clark. That one is scheduled for 6:30pm so consider a re-route if Clark is your normal route home in the evening. I used to call his home the Russian mafia house since it looks like a fortress. I lived a block away from there until the end of April. Glad not to be near that area tomorrow!

I used to live across the street from that place.  It is a weird building, but I did get to shake Bill Clinton's hand once when he was leaving a fundraiser there around 2003.

This is the guy that is worth hundreds of millions, yet drives a 1994 Fiesta, and buys his suits at JCP.

Is this his place? My co-worker, who always says he lives in Old Town, lives across from this guy. I guess my co-worker doesn't know his way around Chicago very well.
