Which market more likely to have one's stolen bike: Swap-O-Rama or Maxwell St.?

If your bike were stolen in Lincoln Park, where do you think it might be more likely to turn up?: Maxwell St. or Swap-O-Rama, at 4100 S. Ashland Ave.?

No contest. Swap-O-Rama.
Thanks.

Swap-O-Rama. A few years ago they cleaned up Maxwell st and its pretty legit.

If that was your Trek 7.2 fx, stolen from Clark and Belden, I think it fairly likely to end up at Swap O Rama due to the MO-- the guys who sell there like to cut U-locks, they generally steal bikes locked along main arteries, and they have hit that same area again and again.

The only thing that doesn't quite fit is the type of bike-- they prefer road style bikes with drop handlebars.

As Iggi said there hasn't been much evidence of bike fencing at Maxwell street.

Thank you very much, guys. That's really helpful. I didn't know these guys had a pattern.

There was a late model bike dealer working out of Wolff's Flea Market at the Rosemont Horizon parking lot the last time I was there - I can't speak to the origin of his stock, but if you see your model you could inquire.

And what about maxwell vs. Swap now? Is maxwell still happening?

Back when we were actively chasing bike thieves a few of us went and checked that place out and didn't find any evidence of stolen bikes being sold. It was a little while after this:

The perp claimed to have bought the bikes at the Allstate swap IIRC.

Would be great if someone with a smart phone could at least spot check some of those bikes against http://stolenbike.org if they happen to be there-- would make much more sense than sending every victim to every flea market.

I checked a few bikes out this morning @ Swap-O-Rama while looking for my R20. Nothing seemed terribly out of place until I saw two carbon fiber bikes... I ran their serial numbers, through CSBR & BikeIndex, but nothing came up. I asked the guy how much for the Felt, he said $1800. That's also the MSRP on the Felt page.

Also, I had looked around for the bikes that people had posted about in the past week or two. I saw a speedster with a wire basket, but it was a different color than the one I remembered.

makes you want to throw up, right to see those shiny road bikes that don't belong at a flea market.

That's where I got my bike back and it was so disturbing to see high end bikes next to rows and rows of used car tires and used electronics.

Jaik, thanks for doing this.  Much better to search by make/model/color than to go by serial number-- for one, only about 1/3 of victims (very generous estimate) have any record of their serial numbers-- and even those that don't may not necessarily list them.... and for two, a minor error in the number (mistaken letter etc.) can result in not finding a bike in a search.

It's kind of amazing they let you look at the serial numbers,  I'll bet if you came back 5 minutes later those bikes would be nowhere in sight.

The tires and electronics are probably stolen as well.  About the only thing in that place you can sort of count on not to be stolen are the live plants, produce, and maybe the religious artifacts.
