Any interest in filming a bike-centric version of Rebecca Black's "Friday" at Kidical Mass?

Folks,

Have you heard about 13-year-old YouTube sensation Rebecca Black?
She has gotten over 60 million hits with her video "Friday":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0

I love the song's wholesome themes of fun, friendship and positivity,
by I'm troubled by the video's message that cars are the coolest way to get
to school and parties.

Would any Kidical Massers be interested in helping me shoot a video for a short, bike-centric version of the song on acoustic guitar before Kidical Mass this Saturday with the kids in the background, titled "Bike Friday"? When I sing "Pedalin', Pedalin'" the kids could pump their fists in the air and yell "Yeah!" as in the video. I think they'd dig it. I would post the video on YouTube and perhaps it would go viral.

Let me know if you and your kids are interested in this this. We could do this either at this weekend's Uptown ride or next weekend's Palmer Square ride, depending on interest.

If you're up for this, please spread the word and the video link to the participants so they can sing along.

Thanks!

John Greenfield

Oh John. Don't do this to our ears or the bike community. please...
Do it. I think it would be awesome.

I watched the video and the car love aspect is pretty horrific and it would be good to counter it with some bike love.

But I'm not sure one would effectively counter a 13 year olds notion of the coolness of riding around in  the cars of their older friends with much younger kids riding around on bicycles with their parents.  Seems to me that a more effective counter would be from older riders such as Critical Mass,  or Midnight Marauders.

Anyway, if other KM'ers want to do this, count me in so long as I don't have to sing or do anything excessively embarassing on film...

Good point, but I'm going to be busy this next Mass and young kids doing this would be really cute. I will

probably show up next Saturday with my guitar, mic, cord and stand (can I use your trailer for sound?).

I'll check in with you later in the week to confirm. Otherwise we can do this at Palmer Square the following week.

Thanks!

As usual, I agree with Todd. I don't think that doing a parady with young kids would do anything to make riding look cool.  It could even serve to make biking seem like something to be grown out of.

We could surely write a much better song than "Friday."  Critical Mass would be a really good tie-in since it is a Friday activity.  Even better would be a more normalizing bike video.

Of course, the most important factor is finding someone young and attractive to be the actual star. That's how pop stars are made, isn't it?

John, thinking more about this, the Palmer Square ride would be a much better choice then the Uptown ride.  First the turn out is likely to be much better and it will be a more experienced group and a lot of the people there know you and will be more inclined to participate and help out.

In Uptown we are synchronizing with the Cyclelogical event and don't have flexibility on the ride departure time.  Before the ride I expect many will be inside for the safe riding presentation and when that ends we need to get rolling asap to make it back on schedule.  It might be possible to do it after the ride, but some will likely leave immediately and others will go inside for the event closing party/swag give away.

Doing it during the ride would also make much more sense on the Palmer ride.  It tends to go very smoothly because it has a high percentage of repeat riders.  The Uptown ride will have just a few seasoned volunteers and they will have their hands full with leading, sweeping, corking and making sure all the 1st time kids aren't racing ahead or veering off into traffic, etc.

So in closing, you can use my bike sound system, but I can't delay the Uptown ride for you or guarantee anyone will be available to participate before or after the ride.  At Palmer there's time to find people to do this before or after the ride and if there is interest there's the capacity to do it during the ride.
Hazel, Louisa, Kevin and I will be at the Palmer Square ride on April the 9th.  We'll get there at 10:30amish (ride starts at 11am) to participate in said video project.

Cool, Let's plan on doing this at Palmer Square.

I will be there from 11:00 - 11:30 sharp since I have to go lead another ride after that.

So let's plan on just doing one or two quick run-throughs of the short song.

Todd, if you want to shoot some footage of the ride itself, maybe this can be spliced

into the video.

Thanks!

10:30 would be better.  The ride usually heads out at 11:00.
