Information

Martial Artist Cyclists

This group is for chainlinkers who practice martial arts or are interested in martial arts.

I practice Tae Kwon Do and have found that cycling increases my stamina and helps me to perform better in classes.  I wondered whether other cyclists who practice MA have had a similar experience. I also thought it would be fun to connect with other martial artists in Chicago.

Would anyone be interested in meeting up on a random Saturday to train and spar?

Hey all -- I'm a regular bike commuter and a gung-ho martial artist. I began my martial journey with several years' training in shoaling chuan kin fu, then spent more than a decade training in TKD (not ITF, but the chon ji forms), transitioned to shorei rye karate and ryukyu kempo, had my own school for several years, trained an under-black belt national champ, and then got a new job and got fat. Ah, well.

I'd suggest that bicyclists should be trained in Kubotan for self defense. Pretty much any small implement can be a Kubotan, and they're the perfect size and range for bicycle use. IMHO. I'm ready to be corrected if there's a better idea, though!

Anyone want to try out Tae Kwon Do? Its a fun way to stay in shape while learning to defend yourself. My school is recruiting students right now and it would be awesome to practice with friends. Let me know and I will send you all the details.

The best aikido in that area would be found at:

http://www.chicagoaikikai.org/ , at 1444 W. Chicago.  I haven't practiced there, but they are very well thought of, and recommended.

Hi Julie! Welcome to the group!  If you are interested in TKD you should check out Dragon Martial Arts and Fitness Center

4715 W Lawrence Ave
Chicago, IL 60630
Neighborhood: Irving Park

(773) 427-6590

We take classes at 8:30pm on Mondays, and 6:30pm on Fridays. It would be cool if you could join us. However, there is full schedule of TKD and other classes.   Master Ron is great and the it's priced pretty reasonable compared to other schools in the area.

I'd love to take a class or two.  Where do you all workout?
