I like the choice of all the gears you can get. My 68 schwinn was a 26" 5 speed. The sn told me this. It was a bare frame with a bent fork. I traded for it, because it was the right size. I found a ladies "Ross" 10 spd in the trash. I used all the components on my schwinn frame. (I straightened the fork sucessfully) I cut a slice of square tubing and halved it. Drilled a small hole and a big hole to mount the front shifter cable. My seat is from a bike shop dumpster. It all works very well. Mostly for free too.

My latest bodge on an early fifties ARO drum brake. The small piece of sheet steel twixt the cable and the lever is used because of the odd pivot post on the end of the lever. The hole in the steel is slightly larger than the ball on the post and fits in the slot below the ball. The cable tension keeps it in place.

A bit more impressive than the three SA pinion gears used as spacers on a front brake caliper bolt that was moved to a rear brake bridge.

I started this group to have a place where 'Bodgers' can discuss what, how, and why they made some form of modifications to their ride that isn't available at the lbs or is available they were able to make something similar from scratch for cheap.

For example, I convert SA AW 3 speed hubs to 2 speed fixed gear hubs. Why? Dunno, but I enjoy doing it.
I have a Rivendell Bleriot with a Sram S7 hub. It has vertical dropouts, which do not make using an IG hub easy. Add a Surly Singleator and problem solved. Looks like a kludge, but it works.

These are the kind of things I'm looking for and hope others can add their triumphs and their 'back to the drawing board' ideas.
