We have two classes coming up soon.

We are offering a six-week Complete Overhaul course Wednesday evenings 6-9pm, April 13 - May 18. You'll learn how to disassemble, reassemble, and adjust each major mechanical system of your bicycle week-by-week. Steve Parkes and Rene will be leading this class. Costs $180 (sliding scale for those who cannot afford full price).

We'll also have a Tune-up Class on two consecutive Sunday evenings 6-9pm, April 10 and 17. An introduction to bicycle mechanics, this class is for folks that are still learning about the functions of their bike and want to gain basic knowledge of how to properly maintain their bicycle. Here you will learn how to do a routine check-up for problems on your bike. The first class will cover tool use/understanding, flats, and checking bikes for problems. Week two we'll learn about brakes, derailleur systems, and the drive-train. Andrea and Froilan are teaching. Costs $75 (sliding scale for those who cannot afford full price).

Let us know ASAP if you would like to join a class: info@therecyclery.org.

The Recyclery's 2010 Winter Update

Greetings!

All of us at the Recyclery are grateful for the support we have received this year. Many volunteers helped us to turn our new storefront on Paulina into a successful retail space and educational workshop. We sold about 420 affordable, recycled bikes and donated about 80 bikes (with Kryptonite u-locks and helmets) to refugees, homeless people and others in need. We hosted three Open Shop times every week with a frequently packed shop. Amy led a summer youth program with kids from the Howard Area Community Center (HACC). We held workshops for members of Evanston Bicycle Club and Nigerian women from Expanding Lives, a local non-profit. None of this could who have happened without many hours of volunteer time, donated bikes, and financial contributions. Thank you!

Goodbyes and Hello

We had some major collective member transitions. Long-term member Sharlyn Grace moved to Boston to attend law school. Stuart Horner is also heading to Boston after some time in Scotland. Benjamin Antieau went west to teach at UCLA. We miss these people. Meanwhile, Darren Knox joined us as a mechanic after biking here from Portland and is doing great work.

Welcome, Paris!

Another new addition is Paris Suggs, a high-school student from Rogers Park. We are proud to have Paris on our staff and excited about the gifts she brings to our team. We believe our shop could be an excellent place for other teenagers to learn valuable job skills. We are currently in conversation with HACC’s youth employment coordinator about ways we can work together. Empowering youth as leaders will provide role models for other kids in the neighborhood. In 2011, we hope to create a stronger job-training program that allows us to do this. Developing the leadership skills in local youth will help the Recyclery better serve those around us and become an integrated part of the neighborhood.

2011 Classes

Taking a bike maintenance class from us is a great way to learn about your bike and get involved at the Recyclery. We’ll have a six-week class, Complete Overhaul 101 (formerly called Build-a-Bike), Wednesday evenings 6-9pm Jan 12 – Feb 16. New expert instructor Ezra Hozinsky brings years of experience to these classes. We also offer a two-part Tune-Up Class Sunday afternoons 2-5pm Jan 9 & Jan 16. Register at http://therecyclery.org/babsignup to save your spot.

Youth Programming

We also hope to continue expanding and improving our youth programming. In our youth classes, we teach kids how to safely ride in the street, cover basic bike mechanics, and discuss the many advantages of riding a bicycle. We have had requests from other organisations to provide similar programs. With expanded resources and developed curriculum, we hope to reach more youth with quality bicycle programming.

Mission Statement:
"The Recyclery Collective seeks to build community through the restoration of donated and discarded bicycles. We share resources and knowledge in order to support an affordable, independent, and sustainable mode of transportation. In this spirit of education and mutual aid, we encourage discussion about how our transportation choices affect the health of our communities and our environment."
Description: The Recyclery Collective is hiring a part-time bicycle mechanic to fix bicycles both for sale and donation. The mechanic will work between 10 and 20 hours a week with a semi-flexible schedule. Working with one or more collective members, this person will be responsible for:
-Evaluating bicycle donations for repair or scrapping
-Transporting bikes between the storage location and the shop
-Making necessary repairs to used (sometimes abused) bicycles in a timely fashion, ensuring they meet The Recyclery's standards
-Reporting work to the Collective, either in weekly meetings or through a liaison
-Maintaining records of bikes fixed and repairs made
Working with the Collective: The Recyclery's governing body, the Collective, meets weekly to decide issues impacting the direction of the organization and operates with no formal director using a consensus process. The person hired for this position will not be required to attend these unpaid meetings, but occasional attendance to communicate directly with the Collective is encouraged. After several months with The Recyclery, anyone who has shown a commitment to The Recyclery and its mission may be eligible to join the Collective.
Schedule: This position is temporary and subject to the availability of bicycles to fix and sales rates. The mechanic will be able to set her or his own hours within parameters set by the Collective. A collective member must be present during the scheduled hours. Scheduled hours may not overlap with program hours during which the shop is open to the public, so available evening and weekend work hours are limited.
Necessary Qualifications:
--Minimum of one year's mechanical experience, references requested
--Experience working on a wide range of bikes, familiarity with bikes and components from the 1960s through the 1990s a must
--Willingness to work under The Recyclery's safe space guidelines and within its Code of Conduct
--Strong work ethic and a willingness to ask for assistance when needed
--Interest in promoting the mission of The Recyclery
--Must have a valid driver’s license.
