FYI, "Paczki" is plural; "Paczek" is singular :)

Ha! I had a feeling I was leaving myself open to a bit of grief for two posts colliding. :-)

But they are so delicious (and only once a year)...

You can get them year round but not at as many places or as many flavors.

Shhh! I shouldn't have that information. ;-)

One time years ago, when I was a frequent customer, the lady at the Bridgeport Bakery allowed me to have a paczki (or paczek) on the day before, fresh off the rack.  I felt truly honored.

From Amazon.com> askville

"A pączek is a traditional Polish doughnut traditionally eaten on Fat Thursday, the Thursday which falls before Lent.

Pączki are deep-fried and shaped like a sphere, often filled with a sweet filling and topped with icing sugar or orange zest. They are made with lard, sugar, eggs and fruit - therefore people celebrate Pączki Day prior to lent to fill up on all these ingredients before their fast begins.

In North America, Pączki Day is celebrated more often on Fat Tuesday, which falls before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent."

"How many calories are in a typical delicious Polish Pączek? A typical pączek averages around ~450 calories".

ENJOY ! We can always burn it off cycling! . . . I hope.

If anyone knows of a bakery that makes eiercognac paczki, I am SO THERE.

Eier Cognac Pączki? That bakery might need a liquor license.

You might want to call Dinkle's Bakery on Lincoln ave. and inquire.

David P., you might want to check out Delightful Pastries at 5927 w. Lawrence ave. (773) 545-7215
They have pączki with Jameson Whiskey & chocolate custard; and pączki with vodka & vanilla bean custard !

Yes! Thanks, Tom. My first such paczki were from a neighborhood bakery in Poznan. Last year a baker in Hamtramck made some to order for me, but I'd love to just ride over somewhere and get some!

Old Warsaw restaurant in Harwood Heights isn't on dnainfo's list and has delicious paczki available year round.
