Sad News About Dave Mirra - BMX Legend, Triathlete, Race Across America Winner

From Bicycling Magazine:

BMX star Dave Mirra, once the winningest athlete in X Games history, has reportedly died by suicide. He was 41.

Mirra was found dead by a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his truck, say police in Greenville, North Carolina, where he had reportedly been visiting friends. He is survived by his wife and two children.

As a dominating and influential BMX competitor, Mirra inspired countless riders. After winning 24 X-Games medals (including a then-record 14 gold) and landing the first-ever double backflip in the Games' history, Mirra raced rally cars, competed in triathlons, and even won the grueling five-day Race Across America alongside former Tour de France racer Dave Zabriskie and motorcycle racing legends Micky Dymond and Ben Bostrom.

Suffering from physical pain perhaps led to this. Having survived a few BMX dirt jumps myself and other injuries, there are days when the pain is so intense...

Sorry to hear that, Juan.

A follow up from Outside gives a little more background to what may have happened.

Thanks, great article. Depression is no joke. So glad that I found a regular hot yoga practice to help me fight the physical and mental pain so as to not bother others with my own problems.

That's great hot yoga helps you. Yoga has also been good for me - I have some old gymnastics injuries and stretching is the only thing that works.

If it helps you, I hope you have good friends to talk to. I'm sure you are not a bother.
