Good Reasons to Not Wear a Helmet
#1. It's a brain bucket. I don't want to put my brain in a bucket. I prefer to use my skull to hold my brains.
#2. Helmets mess with my comb-over and well, you know how unstylish a messed up comb-over is...
#3. Makes you look like a mushroom. I would be OK with looking like broccoli but I can't do a mushroom look...no way!
#4. It's mainstream. I'm hip so I always go the other way.
#5. It costs money. Lord knows I'm cheap. (So I spend a lot of money on personal electronics, I need that! These helmets are nothing but a way to take your hard earned cash.)
#6. It'll scare people into thinking biking is dangerous (much like STDs stopped people from having sex) and then only people who can reason that cycling can be done safely if proper precautions are observed will choose to ride and then cycling will be unpopular and less people will ride and then it'll be dangerous and then only hipsters without helmets will ride and that'll be kinda mainstream and, well see #4.

a bit of a kerfuffle perhaps......I'm just tired of the stigma of being an elitist helmet wearer and looking for a way out. I hope my fellow Chainlinkers can help me out with some more good reasons to change my ways; some ammunition against the ridicule that will surely come from abandoning my faith and living in the world of follicle freedom! Air in my hair! Air in my hair! My kingdom for some air in my hair!

Yes, he could definitely use a helmet to keep his toupee affixed but there is no helmet large enough to accommodate his head size.

I embraced helmets by buying one that I love and I wear it all the time. Not an elitist. Doing mountain biking and cyclocross, I have developed an appreciation for head protection. I don't really notice what other people are doing, I just do this for myself. I think people have to make their own decision about it.

I've only had one crash where I hit my head, but it was a very direct impact that could have ended in skull fracture and/or spinal fracture. Grateful to have an intact brain and spine.
Kids should wear helmets. Adults can make their own decisions, hopefully setting a good example for any kids in their lives.

2) Irvin's original post does an excellent job of leaving me baffled as to whether in the spirit of a talk show host who starts a new gig tonight he has written a terrific piece of satire that almost sounds like it came from the mouth of a true believer or whether he is indeed believing his truth. Or, it just that i am not a careful reader and don't know Irvin from past posts? All these thoughts are leaving me in a post concussive state and I wish i wore a helmet this morning. Then again, I took the train.
