Randonneuring Defined

Randonneuring: Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring.

Any opinions out there on GPS units?  Looking for one that I could pre-load routes on before an event.

Thanks

I rode the Hub City in August. It's not as flat as one would guess for northern Illinois but is a very nice route. Def not just corn and beans scenery. Can get a bit breezy out there! Feel free to contact me offline for more details.

Has anyone here ridden the Hub City Permanent out of Rochelle? I'm curious to hear any impressions.

Yes check out the new GLR website.

Some things worth noting:

  • The 2016 schedule will include rides with the same routes as 2015, along with some new hillier routes, for example the "Mineral Point" rides. If you remember a hilly 400K back in 2010 then this route will be familiar to you.
  • Routes now have names to provide a themed way to refer to them.
  • GLR wool jerseys are available for ordering, with improved quality over the last offering, available from the website here: http://www.greatlakesrando.org/contacts-top-link/club-jerseys-stuff...

There are many other features of the new website, please explore and check it out!

Deet, thanks for that link. This is something I have wanted to get into and that looks like a great group to get started.

May 30 BREVET!

It was cold / windy / wet!  OK, sunny and WINDY on Sunday!

But CONGRATS to the 18 - 600K riders, 7 - 400K and 4 - 200K finishers.

We had very high completion times this brevet, above 35 hours for the 600K (40 hours max).  That tells you how mother nature can whip your ass on these rides.

GLR has one more "ACP" brevet series (200k, 400k and 600k) on June 13th.  If you need one more qualifier for P-B-P or just need the seat time, see you up in Delavan.

GOOD LUCK to all those going to P-B-P this year!

PS:  Just finished posting the May 30th results, RUSA takes a few days to record them next.

Yours truly!

Jason,

The high trestle trail you refer to is for the IA:Central rando group (RBA Greg Courtney), their rides start in Ames, IA. That high trestle bridge looks pretty cool: http://iarando.drupalgardens.com/

The QC group (IL:Quad Cities, RBA Michael Fox) has rides starting in Le Claire IA. In the recent past the QC rides went south and were pretty flat. With the new RBA the routes have changed and now head north with some challenging hills.

It's funny that we have two "IL" groups, GLR and QC, but neither has rides that go into IL (at least not at the present time). Distance to QC ride start is about the same as GLR, and I was grateful that there was an opportunity to ride a 400 there as I had a conflict with the GLR date.

On a side note, QC also offered a brevet week (this week) with the opportunity to ride the full series. Those rides were out of West Union, IA.

See you (and others) May.30th.

Hey Eric.

I did a ride with the QC group a few years back.  I remember that the high trestle trail seemed pretty cool.   I agree it is fun to mix it up.  I have ridden with the St. Louis, Kansas City and Indianapolis clubs this summer.  I am looking forward to the 600k with GLR in a few weeks :)

I did ride with Catherine a bit last weekend.  She is a very strong rider.  She ended up pulling ahead of me but unfortunately she had some navigational issues so I ended up seeing her again on an out and back section about an hour behind me.  I see that she did finish the ride successfully though.

I should also mention that Bill the RBA from the Indianapolis group reached out to me this morning after seeing my comments here about the queue sheet.  This was the first time that they did this route so he will be looking to fine tune things going forward.

Nice to mix it up. I did the QC 400K the week before. Also a tough route, my GPS recorded over 12000 feet of climbing. It was an out and back, with some scenic views of rural Iowa, including the Mississippi River valley. The QC 400K had just four riders, and one of these was a DNF.
Jason did you ride with Catherine LaCrosse by any chance?
