How many miles is your commute? ((read the OP before responding please, hunny-bunnies))

There seem to be a lot of discussions about gear, clothing, winter riding that don't take into account the sort of commutes people have; i.e. advice that applies to someone who rides 15 miles each way may not be useful to someone who rides 3 miles.  So I thought I'd propose that people add the (one-way) distance of their daily commute, or their most typical one-way distance for regular 'utility' (rather than social/fitness/recreational) rides after their user name and see if it helps, or at least provides a little added interest...

I prefer this weather over 100 degrees, though! The Lake Front Trail is nice and clear, too!

Hi Everyone,  I ride 3.1 miles to work each day and back so total 6.2 miles per day or 31 miles per week.  I take Halsted Street north from Pilsen up to North Avenue.  There are three bridges to cross so it's a pretty good up and down workout.  There is a bike lane most of the way, but it gets dodgy around Greektown and through the food district around Randolph Street.  Road conditions just south of the overpass at Chicago Avenue are bad, especially in the southbound lane, where there are potholes big enough to bend a rim or blow out a tire in the right lane.  New member here and am interested in raising awareness city-wide (and in ciity government) about cycling safety.

Don't beef.  This weather rules.  It almost makes me not dream of moving to the west coast.

I too dream of snow-free winters and mild summers.

Thanks Cameron.....I'll give that Green Street option a try.  Greektown is dangerous at night....valet parkers at the restaurants......traffic side doors opening etc.....the valet parking guys will stand right in the lanes or walk out into the street mid-block.....and (ouzo drinking) suburban visitors seem to have no clue about bikes at all.....so be extra aware of getting doored there if you ride on Halsted....so far I've been safe, but TWO of my coworkers got doored in the last week (one broken collar bone which required surgery and one arm in a cast for SIX WEEKS!)....so I'm extra door-shy.

star of "rap movie"

Southbound, Peoria is a nice alternate, too.  And it is just one block west of Green.
