The Chainlink

After growing accustomed to using Divvy as a "last mile solution" I find myself thinking a scooter may serve my needs better than a bicycle in a lot of situations.  Talking about the small foldable things here (e.g. Razor), not the Mods and Rockers type.

Looks like you have to spend about $100 in order to get something that's rated for adult weight.

Internet search gives Target/Walmart/etc. as main options. Dick's stocks a few but absolutely forbids trials or returns.

If anyone knows of a place that has these things in stock where you can try them I'd appreciate the info. Would also appreciate first hand experience with any currently available models.

Thanks for the bump rwein.  Unfortunately there's not a single scooter listed in the city that would be appropriate for an adult.

As far as I can figure out my choices are between this one from Razor:

And a xootr:

Based on the assumption that the small wheeled variety is going to be a disaster on craptastic Chicago pavement.... don't really have any way of knowing that though.

Howard - I'd recommend asking Jane Healy. She has lots of experience with these.

I have purchased 3 scooters and they are great for short commutes...you don't have to lock them up and you carry them with you at all times.  I go along with the Craigslist...  The Razor A5 holds me and I weigh 200lbs...on a good day...  In addition, I have a Viza Kikkit which you can get really cheap as it appears they are closing them out online and I finally bought a Xootr which is the absolute best.  I looked on Craigslist for a long time and finally one came up for sale.  They are expensive but they are very well made.  Also, the Viza has pneumatic (blow up tires) so I changed those wheels for wheels from the Trikke Scooter line.....but the A5 is your best least expensive option...

Thanks Mike, glad to find someone with personal experience. The A5 is rated for 220 lbs. As I posted above there is not a single adult Razor for sale on Craigslist.  Will take a look at the Kikkit. Looks like I'd have to make it up to Highland Park to try a xootr (only one shop in all of Chicagoland carries them.) Unless there's some chance I could try yours.... please contact me at ho.ardbikes at gmail if so.

FYI I contacted Xootr and they would love to have a dealer in the city, if any shop owners are reading here.

I have been wondering how hard these are to ride, but the guy who made this video is wearing hospital footies and seems to be having a hard time breathing, so I'm encouraged...

Check workingbikes Wednesday...I saw some floating around there.

I do not know much about these scooters, here is a version of the scooter you seek.

I don't know how much it cost, I don't think it it is cheap. It looks well built. Only problem is, if you want to test ride it, you need to go to New York City.

Love the way the guy tries to make it look easy to lift (you can see his muscles bulging and how hard he's trying not to shake.)
