Yes, super unpleasant. I would note though, that for most riders coming from the south west or north east, Archer is probably a better bet than Cermak. Archer has bike lanes (mostly) east of Throop. Cermak is four lanes mostly around there, and it doesn't get a lot of bike traffic, so taking a lane is a risky alternative.

Heads up the 18th St Bridge that connects Clark with Canal is closing for repairs this Wednesday until Apr 1, 2015. Detours will be Roosevelt or Cermak. This should be a fun one for southsiders.

Good point. Depending on the destination, Archer may be a better option.  If one is going to/from Pilsen, it could be slightly less direct.

As of Friday Lincoln was also torn up north of Fullerton.  If anyone nearby has reports that's it's been repaved, those would be appreciated.  For now I'm just taking another route home.

Crossed Lincoln at Larrabee/Webster at 5PM Wednesday - it was paved there.

Last night I rode Lincoln from Sedgewick to Belmont--all clear.

Hopefully the end of this is near. It's been really frustrating to ride the sidewalks for the stretch they've been tearing the hell out of. As of Friday, they were working in their ditches at the last stretch. They just might make their end of December target finish date.

The intersection of Bryn Mawr and Kimball will be closed to traffic in both directions starting on Saturday, November 15.

 

Drivers should look for detour signs, which will be posted along Kimball. The current detour route for northbound Kimball is Foster to Kedzie; southbound Kimball drivers should take Peterson to Jersey/Kedzie. 

 

The #82 Kimball Bus will also follow this detour route. Commuters should be aware of signs at bus stops with up-to-date information on the CTA detour.

If you're riding in Beverly and Morgan Park, there's an abundance of utility construction right now. After waiting SO long for 103rd to be repaved, now it's torn up between Longwood and the tracks for gas work. Whatever happened to the coordination that was supposed to happen between CDOT and different utilities? Seems like that project was thrown under a bus in a BIG way this year.  (I was going to include a link to a CDOT press release on this, but NING is choking on links.)

Nearly the entire box from 100th/Wood to 103rd/Wood to 103rd/Prospect to 99th/Prospect is torn up for water main work and has been for a while. It's like riding on dirt roads over there.

The area north of Crescent Park (107th Pl from Hoyne to Bell, and Bell going north from 107th Pl) is similarly torn up for water main work.  (This is the area where the house recently blew up from a gas explosion due to water main crew f!*k up.)  And 107th St. is so bumpy and cratered that it SHOULD get rebuilt - probably next for water mains.  Bonus - street lights are out on 107th from Leavitt to Longwood, so it's tough to see the bumps and craters unless you have a really good headlight.

This is the CDOT press release I would have linked to, if links were working property.  I did not find an equivalent press release for 2014.

City's Project Coordination Office Enters Second Construction Season in Partnership with Utilities

City Saved and Reinvested $10 Million in 2012 After Mayor Emanuel Directed Reform Aimed at Eliminating Duplicative Work; Plans for More Savings in 2013

Mayor Emanuel announced today that the City of Chicago’s Project Coordination Office (PCO) will enter a second construction season with the purpose of coordinating the schedules of infrastructure improvement projects of city departments and electric, gas and telecommunication utilities in an effort to eliminate duplicative work, save resources and reduce the amount of time Chicago’s streets are closed or obstructed due to construction.

Managed by the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), the PCO started operations in April 2012 after Mayor Emanuel ordered greater coordination of the construction schedules of the City’s infrastructure departments of CDOT and the Department of Water Management (DWM) with the utilities of ComEd, Peoples Gas, cable television and telephone companies.

The result was a savings of more than $10 million to the City in 2012 from street and sidewalk restoration work that was performed by private utilities.  This work included 1,224 ADA sidewalk ramps, approximately 7 miles or 55 blocks of sidewalk replacement and approximately 10 miles or 77 blocks of residential street resurfacing.

“By partnering with utilities and scheduling projects simultaneously, we are saving money and ensuring our resources are not wasted,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel.  “Underground infrastructure improvements are necessary, but should be done as quickly and efficiently, and with as little disruption to our roadways, as possible.”

Under Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Building a New Chicago infrastructure improvement program, DWM plans to replace 75 miles of water mains and 17 miles of sewer mains, as well as line 49 miles of sewers in 2013. CDOT, contractors and the utilities plan to resurface 64 miles of arterial streets, 130 miles of residential streets and 20 miles of alleys in 2013. DWM will also resurface up to 60 miles of streets this year.

“Through the use of new mapping technology and an increased level of cooperation, the City and our partner utilities have worked together to increase the amount of infrastructure improvements while reducing the time and instances when our streets are torn up for construction,” said CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein. “We look forward to a productive and cost-effective 2013 construction season.”

Before permits are issued to open a city street for utility or department infrastructure improvement work, the construction schedule is brought through the PCO to determine if there are any conflicts with other entities’ construction schedules.   If two or more utilities or departments plan to excavate the same street in the near future, the projects are coordinated so that the street is opened only once to allow all of the needed work to be done at once.

Then, by coordinating the restoration of the street between the entities involved, all parties end up saving resources, time and money, which can be put into additional infrastructure improvement work.

CDOT has finally (!) started grinding and resurfacing work on the terrible pavement on the piece of Elston at the railroad underpass (Bloomingdale line) just south of Cortland.


Let's hope they do the section between Cortland and Ashland next. That's even worse. Could use some clear lane markers at Ashland too, for those moron drivers who keep cutting me off to turn right on Ashland.

Elston under the bridge all done! Much nicer.

Also, the Addison/Lincoln intersection is milled.

Bryn Mawr is now open from Pulaski all the way to Western anyway.
