The Chainlink

We were headed east on North Avenue over the river and saw a group of hopefully, trainee/police on bicycles.  One officer's bike was too big and he kept swing his weight from side to side as he pedalled.  Another was riding his bike as if it were a small BMX with on knee at a right angle, while his other leg was straight and he leaned from side to side.  Then they all kept looking back to see if their fellow trainees were following.

Please have someone show them how to fit a bike.

So funny! I saw a group as well - maybe 18-20? police on bicycles at North Ave. and Dearborn heading west earlier this week or last week - I was on the phone with my boyfriend and remember noticing - and remarking - that they seemed to be having fun, like it was a social ride and not "on duty" - but they were all in uniform. I didn't notice the bike fit issues! Next time I will look more closely or say hi and find out what's up.

Friend of a friend is a newer CPD officer and went through bike training recently. From what I gathered, most officers on bikes outside of the loop are generally riding a bike that is for their district - they're not on it full-time. The only officers who get a custom-sized bike and can outfit it with their choice of saddle, etc. are the full-time bike patrol folks, and I believe they're based out of the McDonalds Cycle Center on Randolph.

As this dnainfo report shows in it's photos, CPD used a lot of its bike patrol to deal with the active protests on black friday. The bikes that each district has, is used by officers who go through cycle training. They were used in Wicker Park yesterday to control the protest.

Yup. I work across the street from the Daley Plaza and walked out of the door Tuesday evening, the first day after the grand jury decision, and saw a host of bike cops standing around keeping an eye on things. I didn't really see them riding. If I saw an officer with a really misfit bike I would have no problem with politely pointing out that the frame is too big/ small or the seat is too high/low.
