The Chainlink

Hey all, just moved here and I'm looking for a shop to do some work for me. Any recommendations?  I'm up in morton grove, but would travel if need be.

That's a pretty open-ended question. There's a bike shop database under the "Resources" tab above which lists the vast majority of the shops in the greater Chicagoland area, though it's probably more City-centric. If you take a look there, and then ask for recommendations of specific shops you're thinking of, and what and how you ride, it's much more likely you'll get useful feedback.

You're not far from Niles. Amlings on Milwaukee Ave. is a quality shop with good mechanics. If you go there, tell Joe (the owner) that I said hi.

If you're in the city Westtown bikes, cyclo urbano, has open shop where you can work on your bike and get help from mechanics. Then donate $ to the cause.
Works out cheaper if you don't have the tools then next time you know how to diy.

Amlings is a great shop, I passed by and stopped in this summer.  Good prices, nice guys.

If you're ever looking for a good shop closer to downtown (either Wicker Park or UIC area), I highly recommend Rapid Transit. Good people. Good service. I've been very pleased with their work over the years.  I've also bought 2 bikes from them. http://www.rapidtransitcycles.com/

Mikes Bike Shop in Palatine is a great shop.

Uptown Bikes (46 hundred block of N Broadway) and Roscoe Village Bikes (Roscoe/Damen) get high praise in general, in case you ever are around that area.

I would say always go with the closest one to you, first. Because it's so much nicer when they're close and can do the work you need them to do. It's also nice that you can go there often and build a relationship with them.

I live in Edgewater, and the closest one to me is Johnny Sprockets in Andersonville on Clark staffed with great people to work on you bike! But they're closed on Tuesdays and seems like they're always busy, so a lot of bigger work may not be in-and-out in one day. Plan your trip accordingly.

Because I seem to always find my problems on Friday evenings or weekends, and favorite time of the week is to go to bike shops on Monday afternoons, I go to Turin in Lincoln Sq/Uptown - on my commute home with a slight detour. Awesome mechanics there as well. They're still open later as of now, and are open 7 days a week.

I also think they are more approachable if you build a relationship with them.

Pony shop or Wheel & Sprocket in Evanston.

I agree with Anne Alt about Amling's and saying hi to Joe. You never know; you may take a liking to a recumbent while you are there.

Also consider Village Cyclesports in Arlington Hts or in Elk Grove Village
