Dan,

As it tuns out the video guy is a lapsed 'linker, who knew? Multiple first person accounts of extreme wind from him and PHERM .  The simple test would be to get one of these and do a simple pull test and figure the force needed, it's probably less than we might expect?

Anyway Dan, thanks for shooting the video, it is quite interesting.  For it's veracity I want to believe you, I really do but I find this in your photo file and, well, it makes me wonder.

Well, I'm the guy who shot this video on my ride home from work on Friday, 31 Oct.  I'm honestly amazed that anybody thinks this is fake because I can't even figure out how to fake it if I wanted to do do.

On that day, I couldn't take my normal route home due to the winds preventing me from rounding Lake Point Tower.  The front wheel of my 50 lb Dutch omafiets was literally lifted off the of the ground and the whole bike pivoted 180 degrees while I was standing, holding the bike, trying to stay upright.  That happened again near this Divvy station.

Also, why is it so hard to think that a bike can be lifted partially off of the ground by wind?

Anyway, as others have said, there was a north wind, and the station is oriented north-south, so the buildings around and the wall served to direct the wind straight down that stretch of sidewalk.  It was hard to walk against the wind.

Dan.

Fantastic! I am inspired by by the power of nature. Thanks for sharing.

Haddon,

I do have to admit that the sasquatch photo would put my credibility into doubt.  However, Lincoln Park is big and there are mysteries there that few have seen.  I am one of those few.

Dan.

PS: Nice job!  So funny!

I've followed this since it was 1st posted and am surprised anyone would question the veracity of Mr. Applebaum's video whatsoever, since there was also a prominent thread about how THE WIND RIPPED UP THE FREAKING PAVEMENT along the LFP.

Perhaps the folks at Divvy might look into a para sail conversion option for the more adventurous types downtown.

Fake!!!!!

Wind is powerful.....

hahahaha lol at you sheeple. there's a lot more to the bridge "collapse" than just wind...http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=100123

also do you seriously think that wind damaged the lake front trail?? it's clearly the WATER at work. water carries 16x the energy of air and obviously multiplies the destructive power.

WAKE UP SHEEPLE

I'm fairly certain I have a MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH higher understanding of the bridge collapse than you do. Was structural dynamics a factor due to the modal frequency of the bridge and the frequency of the wind flow in that area and the main reason that the structure failed? Yes.

Still caused by, get this, WIND.

WAKE UP SHEEPLE

sorry liz, nice try. try again later.

you can have all the physics and engineering degrees you want (and can pay for LOL), but the reality is you are just being brainwashed and indoctrinated. rise up and demand the TRUTH. it's so sad that american's can't use their brains anymore. O'bummer's aMERIKA is a place where reality is replaced with propaganda and nothing is as it seems.

Oh brother...

Okay, I'll bite. I'm a broadcasting engineer involved in all sorts of live and live to tape productions in the past 2.5 decades and I've have done my share of editing, from U-Matic (too young to remember tape?) on-line suites to data on cards with Avid, Premiere and FCP on my laptop.

Please, I'd like to know the editing techniques to get those bikes to fly like that, I might learn something new and cool. Watching the trees with no leaves barely move in the background isn't a great indication of the wind, but that flag sure is. I'd sure like to know how those bikes are randomly moving via some unknown Man From Oz behind some big on-location curtain. Please explain! In fact, if it's so easy, go recreate it.

If any of you experts saying this is fake have been to that location, you'll know there's a huge concrete building not but ten feet to the west of this location and that with LSD immediately to the east, creates a Venturi tube with a huge north wind.  I find this perfectly plausible, as Dug says, these bikes are just pivoting around their head tube.

Sorry "notorious" (what does that even mean lol) nice try.

If you knew anything about bikes or wind, you'd know it's impossible for that to happen given the conditions. There's a modicum of techniques of moving those bikes manually. Video editing is very simple and something you only need a computer and a mouse to do. If you have those things you can try it. It's very fun and you can make very interesting videos.
