Lake Michigan was amazing that day... I took some videos and pictures at Gillson Beach in Wilmette...

It was a really cool thing to see!

I rode the bike path from addison to navy pier at 4PM Sun.  Everything is passable..although you need to ride single track for a bit between fullerton and north ave.  There's too much sand on the path.  I'll def be riding into work tmmrw.

The damage is hard to believe...Never seen anything like it.

Couple more shots from Saturday

Thank you, everyone, for the updates. Please keep the photos coming on Monday so Active Transportation Alliance, the Chicago Park District, CDOT (who is building the Navy Pier Flyover by Grand Ave.), and regular path users know what's up.

It doesn't look like this is going to get fixed before spring/summer next year.  I don't see riding this with snow/ice on the path or the Parks district being able to plow/salt this part of the path properly if there are sections of asphalt missing.

I wished I had look on Chainlink this weekend. My commute on the lakefront path was pretty insane this morning. I guess the path is out from the rest of the fall/winter season? Boo.

This morning there was a little orange front loader starting to dig out the trail south of Fullerton.  If they work all day it should be clear for tonight's commute.  Just like in the winter avoid the trail between Navy Pier and North Ave and it's okay.

My alternate LFP route (suggested, take it or leave it) is Cannon Drive and State or Dearborn. I use this route summer evenings (when LFP is packed) and most of the winter (depending on LFP conditions). I ride it both south and north, and I've never had an issue with riding north thru the zoo parking lot.

Also, every year portions of the asphalt get picked up by waves, typically in the winter between North and Oak though I've never seen it to this extent. It baffles me that they continue to pave new asphalt in the spring only for it to get carried away again in a few months. Compare that with the concrete to the east of the LFP that weathers the storm much better.

That's looking North between Oak and Division.

Wow indeed. Where was the photo taken?

Loads of good routes inland for this stretch of the path, folks. Come ride in traffic with us--the more the merrier/safer!

Hmmm, I never considered Cannon Drive. Southbound you take it to North and then turn onto State? I'm not very enamored with Dearborn, not even the dedicated bike lanes. South of the river, the LFP isn't bad. The path between Oak and the River is treacherous. I'm looking for the safest route between North Ave and Illinois, in both directions.

Thanks!

I'd suggest State Street.  It's not too busy in the mornings even in the loop, and up around Illinois there's lots of space for bikes in both directions.  I'm not a big fan of Cannon Drive since there's a lot of parking going on, lots of buses, and it's a bit narrow and hilly so it can be hard to be seen.  Above North the trail is fine (at least it will be when the sand's cleared).

I normally take State southbound in the mornings and the lake all the way home from Wabash, but in winter I usually take Dearborn because State in the loop is no good at night.  Dearborn isn't great north of the river, though, since you're on the left side of traffic in the bike lane, which then disappears at Walton so you have to get over the the right to continue up to North Ave and the trail again.
