The Chainlink

Just wanted to vent here.

I don't know whether to find this annoying or pathetic. A thief attempted to steal my bike (locked to a bike rack with a New York Kryptonite lock - yes, front wheel & frame and also rear wheel U-locked to frame). The idiot/imbecile undid the quick release front wheel, but again not sure where he (I'm assuming based on statistics) was going with that.

Upon realizing there was no way he was getting my bike, he grabs my rear knog reflector out of frustration... D-bag better make GOOD use of that!

ok, that's all. Just rest assured no matter if your bike is parked next a dozen other bikes during the day at an El Station, a thief/pathetically-sad-person will make every attempt.

Plus 1 - Kryptonite lock. Knog light was a minor casualty.

Does anyone else have a fantasy wherein they catch the said thief in process of stealing your bike? If so, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

You leave your Knog light on your bike when you lock up ! ? OH MY ! ! Trust no one in the vicinity of a L stop !

The "What would I do?" question is something I ask myself every time I see a bike stripped down and left, or see a broken lock on the ground.

Sometimes I think about what I wouldn't do.....but I have no positive thoughts of being in prison so I choose not to lock up in the city if I don't have to.

Did you witness this or are you inferring the thief's actions from the condition of your bike when you returned?

I prefer to think of this as confirmation of what the CSBR has been saying all along; i.e. Bikes that are U-Locked to a bike rack don't get stolen (well less than 5% of reports to the CSBR, anyway). You did everything you need to do to prevent your bike from being stolen-good lock, good technique, good location). Glad you were only out a Knog light.

@Kevin C  Yes, I'm inferring what happened. You're right, I thought the same thing that my bike was still intact and nothing major stolen.

I have this recurring fantasy of taking out my camera, getting in his face and taking photos, following the punk and flagging down an officer who arrests him based on my photo-evidence. That's it.

About four or five years ago, It was a stormy night, and I had locked my bike up outside my girlfriend's apartment. We went out, ended up back at my place, and I had to work in the morning. I ran over to her place first thing, only to see that tree had fallen over on my bike. Sigh. So I spent about ten minutes wrestling this tree, probably looking a little crazy. I finally get the tree off my bike, and turn around to look at it. The seat was stolen. I wish that tree had fallen a little earlier, and pinned the guy with the wrench on my bike. I would have laughed much more.

You can't make this stuff up. What an experience.
