The Chainlink

can anyone offer advice for buying a beach cruiser?  target has some that look super cool but I'm wary that they will ride poorly after not too long.  I can repair bikes fine and know enough about most other bikes to judge decent vs not.  but cruisers are pretty simple and I'm wondering if there is a big advantage to the treks and electras vs huffy.  anyone have experience with both?

Thanks

I wouldn't consider buying any of the bikes you mention.  If you want a "cruiser" and know how to work on bikes why don't you get yourself a vintage mid-century bike?  They're easy to find on craigslist or elsewhere.  It would be nice if authentic, stylish, high-quality reproduction bikes were available, but they're not.  The cruiser bikes you mentioned are a sorry excuse for the real thing.

Electra makes a superior riding Cruiser bike.

You can get them in many forms...

- 7 speed

- 3 Speed

- Aluminum or Steel

- Generic or Fashion

I will mention they are now owned by Trek.

To me this means that the cool offerings of them will be waning.

I picked up a 70's Huffy Cruiser for $25 a few years back, heavy but sturdy. Also single speed and slooow.

Bike and Roll Chicago sells their rental bikes for reduced cost of what they were originally purchased for.  They have 2013 and 2014 Electra models available for purchase. They come in "as is" condition, but you get to pick out the bike you want (so you can choose a less scuffed up bike). Bikes are tuned up before they are sent out with the customers.

The 2013 Electra models are going for $199, and the 2014 models are going for $299.  This doesn't include taxes, or any of the additional equipment (like bells and water bottle cages, etc.)

Bike and Roll does this sale every year, to create space for next season's bikes.  They have other bikes on sale, but you were mentioning the Electra, so I've left it at that.

I told my sister about the sale in 2008.  She purchased a Trek 7100 hybrid, which was in great condition (needing a tune up though...) before it was stolen last year.

It's not a brand new bike, but if you're looking for a quality bike at a decent price, it may be worth checking out!
