I actually take back my complaining. I haven't been able to get out on any trails yet this spring, so Milwaukee is the closest to mountain biking I get. Woo-hoo! I wouldn't ride it with any tires < 28mm, though

Seriously, it's really, really bad between Chicago and Erie. Dusty and hazardous, and it'll beat up any bike that is made for smooth asphalt.

I "discovered" the rough grooved pavement on Milwaukee last night. I was happy to be on a mountain bike.

Milwaukee between Chicago and Erie is even worse as of yesterday afternoon. Really dusty riding south this morning too. I'll be taking Clybourn/Cortland to get to Elston for the next couple o' weeks.

Yeah Milwaukee is terrible and dusty between Chicago and Grand.  We cut over at Erie when we were heading south which helped for  a block or so.

+1.....Milwaukee is now the "funnest" part of my commute.

In the South Loop, the water main project on 9th between State and Wabash finally seems to be done. This section is now ground down for repaving. Hopefully they'll finish it soon.

16th St. from Michigan to Wabash is dug up right now, with lane closures and lots of loose gravel and steel plates. Good place to avoid on a bike right now.

At lunchtime I noticed gas main replacement work being done on Wabash north of Washington. It goes at least as far as Randolph. Not sure if it extends further north.

They're creating a narrow trench - covered by steel plates when they're not working.

In an exchange on another site, I learned that the Harrison bridge over the Ryan is closed due to construction.   I occasionally go between the Loop and the UIC area, so Harrison has been my mainstay.

My alternate route would be: WB Harrison over the river to SB Desplaines to WB Taylor, assuming that's all still open.  I need to go that way again soon, so I really hope my alternate is workable right now.

This summer we've got too much freakin' construction in - and within a few miles of - the Loop.

Strangest thing--Big beautiful new sharrows painted on Wood north of Augusta all of the way to Ellen.  And a crew was marking some lines on the block of N. Wicker Park Ave. southeast of Wolcott.  Is this useless pavement marking going to be part of the cycling infrastructure the City is touting?

Heads up: Peoria St. over the Eisenhower is scheduled to close June 2nd. Contractors are putting up temporary scaffolding at Morgan so people can get to the Blue line but will be obnoxious to bike over, especially during commute times. I also foresee random weekend closures to the Morgan Street Pedestrian Scaffolding considering how much still needs to be done to the bridge.

To avoid this I’d recommend riding a quarter mile west to Racine in order to cross the expressway. Another option includes Loomis further west.  Van Buren> Desplaines>Taylor would be good if you are going south and Taylor>Jefferson>Van Buren for northbound travel.

North Side--Clark St. by Gethsemane, right where Ashland merges. Big pit in the northbound center lane starting tonight. Merge traffic is in the parking lane.

What about Halsted?

Halsted has had some awful construction recently making it a bit unpleasant. Not sure what its current status is?

Halsted has been reduced to two narrow lanes. It is doable if you don't mind getting squeezed into a concrete jersey barrier. Harrison is still closed.
