The Chainlink

Early this evening, while riding on quiet side streets, I encountered two drivers who completely ignored stop signs.  They didn't even slow down.

Please, drivers, at least slow down and look left and right before blowing through a stop sign!

Don't even get me started on how many drivers I saw make right turns on red (not) after stopping...

The solution is to stop misusing 4-way stops as traffic calming devices.

I like the Idaho stop as a "Yield" rather than un-clipping your shoe and stepping on the ground. But that's only when you can confirm there are no other vehicles on either side. We have to maintain that eye to eye contact. Glad you brought this up

I also have noticed a marked decline in road rules adherence this spring, for some reason, as both a driver and a cyclist. Just yesterday, a large SUV slowed down for a yellow light, then actually *sped up* as I started to cross the intersection on my bike as his light turned red. I was also almost doored twice, sigh.

I know the Chicago police have a lot of things to do and traffic scofflaws aren't high on their list of priorities, but yeah, this is getting out of control. It is making me think that red light cameras might not be so bad.

Do you really drive an hour and bike an hour, each way to and from work?

Red light cameras are a good thing.  Almost every cycle, at almost every light, the last car through the intersection doesn't enter it until the light is already red.  That's what I observe, anyway, in my daily 2 hour drive + 2 hour bike ride.

Inevitably, stop light cameras will be ubiquitous. I'm on board with that idea. I think it will also help reduce crime in general. I suspect that within a few years, most of our public activity will be monitored.
