The Chainlink

Been thinking about doing the TdS ride this year. I've seen videos on YouTube from the past 2 years and it looks like a blast. I've also read quite a few of the TdS threads here while searching before posting this question.

I was looking at the website, and saw that there is a pledge collection sheet, which brings me to my question. Is there a "minimum amount" that needs to be collected before being allowed to ride? I didn't see any mention of a certain amount, but I'd like to be sure before I think on this ride much more.

I've participated in past charity rides that required a minimum of $150 in pledges, which I always struggled to meet (usually had to make an extra donation myself at the end to make it). Never was too good at talking people into donating to a good cause, and I am hoping to avoid having to do a really hard sell to get pledges.

Any information will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

You? staying at a hotel?

The trek for 20 miles from the campground to the first break and donuts before breakfast, on the second day, was tough.

And think about that city bike. I did it on the Linus last year and the first day was a little rough on the backside.

I'm doing it on the Linus this year because you did last year :)

Hi Adam:

Collecting pledges is strictly voluntary. There is no minimum. Cyclists are under no obligation to pay more than the registration fee and bus ride back option if needed. Looking forward to riding with you. Best regards, Steve Coughlin, Ride Director, www.letourdeshore.com

Who else will be at the Tour De Shore kickoff party Saturday at Bucktown Pub?

I would really like to, but I don't think it is going to fit into the schedule. :-(

Parking there will not be easy.  Looking at it, even though the Ashland bus will be slow, the Orange Line to the bus might be the best.  Not an easy walk from the Armitage stop on the Brown line because the streets are not pedestrian friendly.

I'm going to try to make it, especially if I can find a decent public transportation option. I hate driving in the city. My wife always took care of the driving if we had to go downtown, or pretty much anywhere in the city. I would always either get lost, or get frustrated...sometimes both!!

Looking at a couple of options, I could take take the South Shore (I'd be coming in from Northwest Indiana) to the Loop, then the Brown Line to the Armitage station and walk over. Another option is the Orange Line from Midway to Ashland, then the #9 Ashland bus up to Cortland.

Or I guess I could just suck it up and try driving it and pray I don't lose my cool. LOL.

Not exactly in response to the OP, but who is riding TdS next weekend?  Are you camping camping or (like me) camping at the Best Western or other motel?

Shay and I will be at a Red Roof Inn.

Separate question: Is anyone planning in riding back?

You are going farther on the first day, then.  I am wimping out in Chesterton.

You can do it!  It's flat except for one ginormous bridge overpass in one of the Indiana towns that starts with "H".  It's not a race.  There is plenty of time to get there and relax before they fire up the pizza ovens!

I'll be participating, at least on day one. If, and that's a big "IF," I'm able to walk come Saturday morning, I'll continue on. 66 miles will be pushing me beyond my limits, and camping always makes me stiff by the next morning. I have an idea that Aleve will be my best friend on Saturday. :)
