Early details of the driver who evaded police barriers and plowed into SXSW crowds in Austin, Texas early this morning, killing two and injuring dozens, some critically.  Also in the Tribune.  According to witnesses, "bodies were flying in the air..."

Is irresponsible, reckless driving, and running from the law, becoming the "macho" thing to do these days?

I believe that it was probably chaotic, confusing, horrific and over in seconds.

I believe that neither you nor I nor CLP were there, or know exactly what happen.

I believe that eyewitnesses and news reports often get it wrong.

I believe that the officers on the scene probably witnessed traumatizing injuries and deaths, that they rendered a lot of aid and may have saved lives, and that they will still have a lot of sleepless nights wondering if there was something more they could have done.

And I believe it is in poor taste to take a few headlines and start carrying the banner of "this is the cops fault" because it's easy to "hate the man."

So why don't you all chill out and wait for the investigation to be completed, which is certainly in progress, before you go laying the deaths of innocent people at the feet of officers you've never met.

I swear to god, you people are so ready to crucify any driver that so much as encroaches on your space, and then someone runs down 25 people, killing two of them, and you want to blame it on someone besides the driver. Is your bloodlust never slaked?

For the record, when murders happen, I tend to blame the murderer. But maybe this article lets us all know what we've really lost.

So very very sad. There aren't specific details yet for the benefit at the Heartland, but I for one plan on attending.

It looks like he was already being followed by a police car before he went into the crowds of people.  But I don't think the cop was in error for following him for evading the checkpoint.  Its his fault for being drunk and driving to begin with, obviously.

Heartland Cafe announced a benefit for the victims on May 1.

Would be nice to have a bunch of cyclists show up in support. Anybody down?
