makes a ton of sense to me and might alleviate some of the concerns of the protected lane haters?

I really like this. I'm a lot more comfortable in dense areas when I can ride in a protected lane. I think more separation (concrete planters) and this intersection design would really help elevate protected lanes from their somewhat dismissible current status into a comfortable, actually protected lane.

That'd actually make protected lanes workable. No more trying to cut into traffic a block early to make left turns and right hooks wouldn't be much of a concern.
