The Chainlink

Traffic 'round these parts dropped off pretty dramatically a few weeks ago... hard to tell from the "I rode today" thread who's still riding, as one would have to conclude that Gene is the only one out there most days by reading it....

Who's sticking it out and plans to continue to ride pretty much every day regardless of weather?

My thinking exactly - 3 degrees with a tailwind should make for a very tolerable ride, especially once you warm up. Looking forward to seeing the LFT again.

Tomorrow is looking like a distinct possibility!  Temperature by the time I leave around 7:30 is forecast to be around 3 degrees ABOVE zero.  The wind is going to be strong, but it will be a tailwind for me.  And during the day temperatures will rise to high teens.  It will be a happy day.

20 is the new 40!  Felt like a heat wave this afternoon.

20 is my new favorite riding temperature.

I too like the 20 degrees for riding.  I had on two balaclavas though, and should have gone with only one. SO STUPID!  And I had on one too many core layers.  had four total... three shirts and a thin jacket. shoulda gone with just two long sleeves.  roads were nice too.  I heard coworkers say there is snow coming...

Only around an inch tonight.

Not that it means the car-drivers won't freak out...

A bigger front mudflap would prolong your chain life. Salt is a metal killer. Stay safe!

Bike everyday Mo-Fr 6miles all year one way and back to work in  Evanston

Left the house this morning it was 20° . Felt kinda good .Was able to drop a layer.

In addition to what Steve said - 45north makes a chain called "willful neglect". They tested it with 500 hours of continuous salt spray without any signs of corrosion. Cost me about $30. Been using it all winter & still looks/works like new. I'm guessing it'll last me many seasons. Great tandem, Gin! I love riding with my kids. A tandem would be fun.

Thanks for that tip! I've used KMC stainless steel chains on my (internally-geared hub) folders for years. They do well in the salt, but they are too wide for derailleur-based drivetrains.

The only other addition I'd consider for that tandem in the winter is studded tires. I'd hate to dump it with a child on the back.
