Quick Divvy ride from Union Station to the office in river north. It was a nice change from the typical longer commute in from Wrigley and interesting to use Divvy for its "intended purpose" - i.e. the last mile. Also, no special winter clothing needed for such a short ride! I was worried about there being a lack of bikes outside the station at 8am but there were plenty available -- Why aren't more Metra commuters riding Divvy??!!!!

Wind! That was a brutal ride home straight into the west wind most of the way. At least in the morning it is still supposed to be out of the west and it will be a tailwind. :-)

Last night was brutal! A ride like that really highlights the "holes" in my winter gear, which in my case is wearing bike shorts combined with leg warmers under winter "sport" pants. I got home feeling stung and numb anywhere not covered by windstopper material. Soft shell didn't cut it.
- I had to stop twice to warm up.
- I lost a fender bolt and had to stop and pull off my water bottle cage to get a bolt to reattach the fender.
- The batteries in my taillight died (from the cold?)

Last night (really 4pm-ish) was the first time I felt cold in multiple places. By the time I got home my hands and feet were cold, though not dangerously so (no important parts fell off). I could have used an extra layer here and there. I kept thinking about the photos of TdF riders grabbing newspapers to stuff in their jerseys at the start of big descents.

I took the short way, so only three miles and only a thumb got cold. I don't think I would have done it if I had seven or eight miles to ride.

I bow to you Lisa. I thought about it and just could not pull the trigger. Of course, I go a little farther, but still, you were tougher than I. I hope a nice hot toddy awaits you for your return home on Christmas Eve.
