The Chainlink

On longer/more rural rides I've been clipping a Platypus bottle onto my front rack but really, it's kind of a pain in the ass. I'd like to figure out a way to mount a bottle cage (which I already have) on my downtube, which lacks bosses. There are a number of solutions for this online but it's hard to tell how sturdy they really are.

Does anyone in Chicago sell something for doing this where I can go and see how it works on my bike in person?

How big are your bike's tubes? There is a clamp setup that was pretty standard BITD before water bottle bosses were common. It should work fine on an old-school steel frame with normal sized downtube.

It is a 70s Japanese steel frame with round tubes on the smaller side.

Ah, then you should be fine with many of the available solutions. TA was a manufacturer of such things once upon a time. They can still be found on evil bay. For example:

The Minoura_Bottle_Cage_Holder_BH95X is available at REI or online at Bikenashbar.

The Zefal Gizmo is lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to mount.  It will not mar your paint, and solidly holds your cage and bottle.  Available at most LBS, and online.  This is mounted on my PX10:

No, it's a Flickstand, an oldschool device that replaces kickstands.

Is that a nail puller on your front tire?

There are tons of adapters out there; your local bike shop should have several.

I recently sold my Nishiki It had the same duct tape attached cage with the originally applied tape for about a dozen years.

I myself use a Twofish Quick-Cage on my Jamis Aurora when I need to carry a bottle for camp stove fuel.  When I mount it near the bottom bracket, I find that even if I use an extra piece of inner tube rubber to add friction, I'll still have to deal with it slipping toward my chainrings.  It seems to me that one of these other solutions might work better.  I'd use pieces of inner tube with the TA clamps to avoid marring my steel frame.

+1 on the Gizmo, these things are great for mounting all sorts of stuff securely, including fenders to chain and seat bridges, lights to forks / frames, and of course water bottle holders.  I've never had a problem with slippage or them breaking, even with heavy stainless steel fenders mounted to them.
