The Chainlink

I'm considering biking southbound on the LFT tonight after sundown, to get to Hyde Park.

A couple years ago I biked from HP northbound after dark and found it to be a little too dark for my taste; I felt I had to go extremely slowly to ensure I didn't slam into a pothole or anything.

I've heard that there is better illumination these days. Anyone have thoughts?

I ride from North Ave to Belmont, and there are definitely places that need better light coverage. Some of the lamps appear to be burnt out as well. Overall, it's fairly well-lit, just needs some work in a few areas.

Sorry, I should have clarified that I will be leaving from downtown.

You should know the LFT is closed for construction right now between like Jackson (maybe? not sure) and Museum Campus. There is a detour, just use the path down at the edge of the water, but the pavement on the detour is in bad shape, and it's not well lit in some places.

My recommendation is to get a good light. I've get the NiteRider Lumina 650 and it's bright enough to light up the entire width of the LFT ten or so feet ahead. Coincidentally, all NiteRider lights are currently on sale at REI.

Bleh.

Well, this ride would be on Divvy, so...maybe I will just take the bus. Lol.

The lights on a Divvy bike aren't bright enough.  Work in HP so end up commuting back after dark and the LFP is seriously dark in spots and there are stretches without any lights.  You'll need another light source although I have seem quite a few people riding the LFP without any lights so it can be done even though it's a bit foolish.

You can ride down state from the south loop to 35th and then east to drexel and then take drexel the rest of the way to HP.  That's a pretty well lite route and I have found it to be reasonable.

Agreed. The lights on the Divvy bikes are for to be seen, not for the rider to see.

The area around Mcormick place always creeps me out a little. I don't see why they can't have shorter lights along the way for guidance and illumination.

Thanks. I ended up just taking the bus but I agree that Drexel is lovely for biking.
