The Chainlink

I'd been waiting to get my Divvy membership until stations popped up near me. I work in the suburbs, not downtown, so I mainly want a membership in order to more easily get to and from the train on those days when I don't feel like riding 22 miles roundtrip to work.

I finally bought my membership on Monday when I saw new stations opening up closer and closer to me. I was thrilled earlier today to read on Divvy's Twitter feed that a station is going up very close to me, on Addison and Pine Grove.

And then I read this: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-divvy-bike-sharing-lawsuit-2....

I'm furious. What can I (we) do to counter these NIMBY types? I think it's entirely unfair that a couple of cranky people can ruin bikeshare for my neighborhood.

The news eats these stories up.

Who's the alderman there? That's outside Tom Tunney's fiefdom, right? I am excited about that station and would love to let all the relevant public & quasi-public officials (including my condo board pres.--that's right around the corner from my building) that I love the station.

and the too much information I now offer is--I don't live in that condo anymore. I live in one down the road a bit now, which is in Tom Tunney's ward. In case anyone was curious why I did not know who my Alderman is!

Thanks for introducing me to the awesome term NIMBY.

Do you not read Streetsblog??? :)

Mr Kolin technically is not a NIMBY, but a NIFOMB. The differences are subtle, but nevertheless real. ;)

Even if you read the Trib article, you absolutely must read the quotes from the couple included in the Sun Times article.

Hahahahaha

“Strangers will be at the front door, 24 hours a day and children who come and go from the building, which has no doorman, will be at risk,” Kolin, a lawyer, wrote in the suit filed Wednesday. The station “will destroy thousands of dollars of improvements made by the resident members.”

Strangers outside your door? Sounds like everyone (including me) who has a bus stop if front of their house. I wonder if this guy would sue to remove a bus stop too. I would also like to see how he proves the station destroyed improvements they made.

Anyway, I wouldn't get too upset. Entitled lawyer pricks like this are always looking for a reason to sue. He doesn't have any real case here.

My favorite is the complaint that the station is such a monstrosity. Is this station 60' long and 40' tall?

It's the Godzilla of Divvy racks!

This particular station appears to be in Alderman Cappleman's ward, because he's named as a defendant in the suit.

However, for those of you who live in Lake View in Ald. Tunney's ward who want to express support for Divvy and for biking in general, consider joining the social ride on Monday evening, Aug 26th, arranged by Bike Lake View, which is listed on the CL calendar. Ald. Tunney will be in attendance, and maybe you can convey your thoughts to him directly while pedaling along.

It was first thing in the morning so I didn't look very closely, but it appeared to be in the street. There was a WGN van setting up as I walked past; that's mostly what I remember. I would have used a bike in solidarity but I don't have my Divvy key yet.
