I think I am going to ride in my first Critical Mass tonight. Any tips or words of encouragement for a newbie who just 6 months ago was terrified to ride in the city at all? And, no, I won't be riding in my underwear.

It is virtually impossible to make an ass of oneself at CM!  Raining down here now, but I see light to the west.

Thanks, everyone! Fortunately I have gone very quickly from terrified to riding everywhere. I ride form Logan Square to Hyde Park for work and have even made a few forays into the Loop so I am comfortable with riding alone. I am more worried about unwittingly making an ass of myself around so many other people who have a lot more experience!

Now I'm just watching the weather...

Nah dont worry about making an ass of yourself leave that to the a-hole/d-bag peds/drivers that will be shouting out stuff while bikers ride past them in their underwear.

It would be really hard to make an ass out of yourself at Critical Mass. The only way I can really think of is being so drunk you crash and wipe out other people. That is acceptable behavior on the Halloween ride though. :)

Make sure to make lots of noise when riding under an underpass.

So what do you think?

I'm so mad at myself! After looking at several weather forecasts and out the window I decided to skip it because it looked like the weather was going to get nasty. I just wasn't in the mood to ride in the rain. I felt like a big dummy when it didn't rain a drop until almost 9:00PM. I tried to make up for it by going for a 14 mile ride this morning.

I had a great time! Even though we somehow ended up at the back. :-)

So yesterday i had a newbie that rode near me and before you know it he was yelling out happy friday and making noise under the bridges and talking to random people throughout the ride.  After the ride he followed me back towards 6 corners and said it was alot of fun and thanks then went on his own from there.  Maybe we should start a group that newbies can meet up with before the ride and vets can give them a run down of how the ride goes and what nots.

I would be more than happy to help out you newbies. :-)

Adam will volunteer to lead a train of newbies as they take the lane all the way down Lincoln Ave. ... :)

I think that's a great idea!
