The Chainlink

I wanted to start a discussion where we could keep track of and report reckless or dangerous drivers. The more information you can share (i.e. bike camera, license plate numbers, car make, model, and color) the better.

Today I was biking North on Narragansett Ave. when a driver of a

dark-sea-green two-door Honda Civic ILLINOIS FIRE FIGHTER LICENSE PLATES 76325

quickly sped past [he may have been speeding(I'm not going to say he was speeding right now)]. When I caught up to him stopped at a light, I asked him to be more careful. He "compliments" me for biking, and then recklessly burned his tires out accelerating at a high rate of speed.

I tried to report this over the phone but that didn't work with CPD, and so I share it with The Chainlink and Youtube.

Years ago I did a stint at an emergency room and the things that a car can do to a human body will make you sick when you think about them a decade later.  The bike chain that got pulled up the bone and almost carved the calf muscle off the leg, the guy who go doored and cracked his skull and needed to be put in a coma or the legs going this way or that as they came in (imagine the worst).  I thought I could deal with it but I got out of there as soon as I could.

I actually invented a couple words "Hood time" which meant the biker got chipped up on the hood, this was bad and actually a lot of the injuries here where when the driver then slammed on the breaks and tossed the driver onto the road.  Still with 'Hood Time' there was physical therapy but the person could call their loved ones themselves and say they had been an accident.

'Wheel Time' meant the biker and bike ended up under the car and really, all bets were off.  Here, they probably didn't call their loved ones themselves and a car can do amazing things to a human body - frames twist apart and the person rolling around under the car is basically like a guy in a washing machine with a bunch of swords.

With all this ALL THE TIME I see bikers doing ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING:

-No Helmet

-No Lights or Reflectors

-Wearing Ear Buds or Headphones !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOLY SHIT ON THIS ONE

-Wearing dark colors and going the wrong way down a one way street and more

I think a lot of drivers pilot their cars like obstinate idiots but if we are going to call out drivers we also need to call out bikers that are heading out onto the roads with zero regard for their own safety.  Not that the driver in this video is probably anything but an ass but we should also be posting pictures of bikers that are being reckless in their own way.

I'm not sure I understand your complaint. Did he pass dangerously close? From your video, it looks like you were in a lane and he passed you in the lane next to you giving you plenty of room. Perhaps you can elaborate on why this driver in particular is dangerous.

He did give me plenty of room, I was in a different lane so there was no issue with that. I did record him burning out which could be considered dangerous as he (Male driver) could possibly have lost control of his vehicle. His actions are also prohibited under Illinois Vehicle Code.

(625 ILCS 5/11-505) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 11-505)
Sec. 11-505. No person shall operate any motor vehicle in such a manner as to cause or allow to be emitted squealing, screeching or other such noise from the vehicle's tires due to rapid acceleration or excessive speed around corners or other such reason.

This could be interpreted as reckless driving.

(625 ILCS 5/11-503) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 11-503)
Sec. 11-503. Reckless driving; aggravated reckless driving.
    (a) A person commits reckless driving if he or she:
        (1) drives any vehicle with a willful or wanton

disregard for the safety of persons or property;

I wanted to give an example and start a discusion, the driver definitely was not the worst or best driver but I still wanted to bring attention to bad driving.

I completely understand Haddon. I was thinking about adding bikes to this discusion, but I think it might be best to have a separate discusion on when biker are themselves an issue. I see mostly older folks biking on sidewalks, or at night without a front and rear light. I try to let people know that they can join me in the streets to bike or to use lights at night time or even dusk.

I think the best way to help is to talk to cyclists when you can and let them know that they are on the wrong side of the road, are on a side walk or dont have enough reflector and lights (I use a blinker and strong flash light for the front and two blinkers in the back and one on my backpack for nighttime riding).

Either you or I should start a dangerous bike riders discussion, I will gladly provide photos or video of dangerous cyclist (or start the discussion when I have photos or videos).

So, if I understand correctly, this guy passed you with plenty of room and was doing nothing dangerous or reckless, but you caught up to him at the next light, record his license plate, and then lectured him on being more careful. He then burns some rubber. If that's the case, I guess I'm wondering why felt like you needed to tell him to be more careful? It seems like you're almost inciting this behavior.

What kind of camera did you use?  I'm thinking of getting a GoPro, or something similar.

Actually In this video I was wrong as well as he was wrong. I just didn't want a flat tire lol.

Well heres one of my videos which youtube made it look worse. Maybe I was a bit angry at the time when I responded to his actions.

Heres the video

To the OP, the car was nowhere near you yet you crossed over to the left of the auto traffic to do road rage on him?  You were the guy doing unsafe stuff.

Fixie, no brakes, no helmet,  between two lanes of traffic, and it looks like you blew the red light.

I was turning left so I moved into the left turn lane. You can see that I go all the way up to the intersection to make my turn, I just cut the video before turning. I didn't accuse him of anything or react violently (no road rage on my end) when I went up to the driver, I only asked him to be a little more careful and let him know I video record. I think burning out and accelerating swiftly as he did was dangerous, I'm also able to admit that while dangerous the risk of him actually hurting someone was slim. I only asked him to drive carefully, and I don't think he did that.
