Has anyone gone with Heritage Bicycles for powder coating?

Currently I'm working on a build to get an 86' Trek back into shape as a proper road bike. I'm trying to do this on the cheap, so Heritage's $100 frame/fork powder coat is looking pretty attractive. Has anyone used their powder coating services and could speak to the quality?

Thanks!!

From what I understand after talking to one of the mechanics, Heritage outsources this work to a big shop on the South side. This shop also powdercoats all the bikes for Heritage. I got the impression that they deal in high volume powder coating with limited specials. So if you can live with a standard RAL color, this may be a good deal. I'm thinking of doing this for one of my bikes in the winter.

Happy to give you references if you like. Shoot us an email and we can give you a list of customers. Basic RAL colors, sand blast, powder coat...can't really beat the price but there are plenty of powder coaters in Chicago as well.

Don't go to Heritage. Their mechanics are inexperienced and rude. They completely messed up my rear wheel/tire, and refused to admit it and refund my $80.

From my  Yelp review:

I took my bike to the shop to get a broken spoke replaced. The mechanic (his name escapes me, but it was NOT Alan) replaced the spoke, no problem. I rode away, and not five minutes go by without TWO MORE spokes popping out of my rear wheel. I took it back to the shop, and they told me I needed a brand-new wheel, and installed it for me. I left the shop , but noticed that my bike was giving a very bumpy ride. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the tire was not seated on the rim properly. I returned to the shop - yet again - to get this fixed. The mechanic tried to fix it, but told me that there was nothing he could do, but it shouldn't affect anything.

I don't know what all your issues were, but I've had work done there and they got it right and were very nice.

So, Adam, it seems you don't have anything constructive to say with regards to powder coating at Heritage.  Are you suggesting your experience is reflective of their overall service, including powder coating?

When I look at their Yelp page, I see they have a 4.5+ out of 5 star rating.  Perhaps your experience was an anomaly.

If you're limited to RAL colors, you still have a boatload of choices!

Nerd question:  What does RAL stand for?

No, I don't think it was an anomaly. If you actually read the reviews, a great deal of them are just rating the coffee shop and not the bike service. I highly doubt that the owner personally insulting me (he Yelp messaged me claiming I had no idea what I was talking about) and the mechanics lack of ability to properly mount a tire after three tries were anomalies.

You got a new rear wheel installed for $80? What kind of wheel was it?

The $80 included the rim, broken spoke replacement, and labor. It was a single-walled rim, but the mechanic never told me that when he installed it.
