Presentations and demos at Saturday's Chicago Bike Swap! [88/100]

Hey folks,

The presentation schedule and demo info for Saturday's swap is posted-- check it out!

http://chicagobikeswap.org/presentations-demos/

Many thanks to all who've helped put things together, from participants to organizers/facilitators (you know who you are :-)  )

This year we have a lot more space, and will be able to leverage it into lots more fun.

Indoor Bike Polo- how cool is that?

Also, while I've got you....  although we expect 2000+ visitors, it's almost become kind of a superstition thingy for me to see us break 100 on the chainlink RSVPs for the swap.... help me sleep easily Friday night by checking in as "attending" here if you haven't already:

http://www.thechainlink.org/events/chicago-bike-swap-2013

(I'm going to add the current number of positive RSVPs to the subject line and update frequently)

See you there!

From Twinkie-poo to assorted Ding dongs:

Video gets complicated fast, what with P-Frames, I-Frames and the rest,  In short for this event a low resolution camera (as found on an iphone) will have problems with processing the depth of field and the quantity of data that this occurrence might will provide.

No, an IPhone cannot, in fact, do everything. This would including capturing a wide shot, deep depth video with significant quantities of motion.  This is still a phone not, indeed, a video camera.

YouTube grinds down video quality and while this is often fine if you double down on it (wide shot video with a phone-not a video camera) reduced yet again by youtube the results can often be bad. This 'shake' will be a lot of motion (say 50 people jumping around) and no, phones are not designed to handle this quantity of data, nor does it have the lens to capture it.

Oh, it can be done with a phone, sure - but if phones were that good would there still be video cameras for sale? It may be that it ends up how it gets done but considering that there are plenty of people rolling around with good quality video devices (sony, cannon) why not shoot with that rather than a phone?

In the end IPhone it may be, but if you know anyone with a semi-decent video camera please ask them to come along. - if this thing goes up online it will probably be as such for years so lets shoot it with something other than a "phone".

The iPhone I own in another universe will do its best not to take your diatribe personally.

I am out the door in a few but if I see someone with what looks to be a 'real' video camera I'll send 'em your way.  Where will you be?

Hi Haddon,

I think its great that you are eager to do the Harlem Shake since its the latest flash mob fad.

Dancing in any form is good for the soul.

However, we are declining your offer to fit the Harlem Shake into the end of our routines.

As soon as we get our stuff off the court and our ipod out of your way then its all yours for the taking and shaking.

Shar,

Would the Rackateers be willing to do second shift as crowd rousers for 'the shake'? You'll be in the shoot, how about you fit this at the end of your routine and one of you can be that first person in the video with a bike helmet on?

ALL FOR NOTHING UNLESS SOMEONE COMES UP WITH A VIDEO CAMERA, - more people will read this later so if you are now reading this and have a decent rig and nominal edit skills please say something.

Also - Unless I get to buy a willow button i'm sorry to say I'll have to cancel the entire event outright.

Haddon, just make sure that The Racketeers are done and off the polo floor before you take it over pretty please.

Thanks

Shar (Racketeer)

Yea I do come across a bit preachy, I apologize. It was late and I was tired.  Please forgive.

Ha ha! You'll have to go to Chicago Zine Fest to find my mature* button line.

"I [heart] my bike" and "VELO/LOVE" button sets will be at the bike swap.

"I [heart] s_x" and "M is for m__________n"** button sets will be at the zine fest.

Early to Bed (NSFW unless you work someplace AWESOME) carries the M button, by the way. E2B gives half of the button $ to Scarleteen. E2B is great!

Have a fun time today, everyone!

xoxoxo

*Mature as in for adults who can view things that offend them without making a big stink about it.

**The uncensored versions, of course. And, yes, I have a whole adult A-Z line.

Of course there's a chance of offending someone. Those people are probably still offended by this.
