anyone ride the northside LFP today? how is it? 

i took my inland route up to evanston this morning (halsted to clark/chicago ave.) because of the brutal north winds, but i'd like to take advantage of some of that north tailwind action out on the lakefront for the ride home, but i'm concerned all the slush might have refrozen into rutted ice, as happened several weeks ago.

No snow on the path.  No wind this morning.  A little crunchy with salt north of Foster.  Nothing's going to freeze until very late at night if at all.  Go for it!

There were a few icy spots along the lake this morning.  I was following someone who slipped and went down and we weren't going particularly fast.  He seemed okay after a few minutes, but I'll just say it's very good he was wearing a helmet.

I also rode the lake in from the North end today. It seemed good at first and I ended up going way too fast. Twice I saved myself from going down after my front wheel started to slip out. You would have thought that I had learned my lesson the first time it happened. Both times I think an audible "Oh shi*" made it past my lips.

Walked it/scooted it between Ontario and Oak. I need fatter tires. Does anyone know why CDOT does plow that? I understand not plowing the curve, but why not the portion south of the curve down to Oak?

No tires are going to save you from that mess.  Since there's no entry along that stretch after Oak I guess the city doesn't want to bother plowing any of it.  I got off and risked my life on Michigan this morning for a change of pace.  I must say I prefer State Street.

Michigan?  Really?  I have never known anyone or known of anyone who actually rode a bike on Michigan Avenue!  :-)

I occasionally ride the LFT as far south as Monroe.  I then have to turn right on Michigan for that short one-block hop north to  Adams.  But I agree, Michigan Avenue is not a street to be trifled with. As bad as the pedestrians and cars further west in the Loop are, add the tourist-y aspect of many of the people around Michigan Avenue gawking at everything, and you have a recipe for bike disaster...

I've done it on occasion, usually for no more than a block or two where there was no better option to connect Point A and Point B, and always with caution.

I have done it twice only because I had to and it was pretty damn scary.

Let's say I wouldn't make a habit of it.  My office is between Wabash and Michigan and I certainly don't want to be on Wabash under the elevated.
