it wasnt bad, slushy on the main streets, the side streets were not as fun.

I started on Augusta, it was bad (bike lane was deep slush), and cars passing me were spraying a lot

of slush (not their fault)

switched to chicago ave - a little better.

Milwaukee was OK - saw two sets of tire tracks left before me.

 

Cars seemed to be pretty willing to give a wide berth today...that was nice.

yes - glad for fenders too...even though everything (including the backpack) is scheduled to

go into the washer and dryer tonight ;-)

Rode on Grand--> Milwaukee-->Kinzie PBL-->Dearborne PBL. Grand and Milwaukee were slushy, but fine. Kinzie PBL was mostly snow covered with snow melt/slush in the center. Dearborne PBL had mini-drifts, but could ride in the left lane. My first snow commute ever...wasn't too bad all-in-all.

The bike path between Ardmore and Foster was plowed and nice.  From Foster to the top of Belmont Harbor it was plowed and salted, so it was wetter.  From Belmont to Fullerton it was only plowed, then from Fullerton to North Ave it was salted again.  Below that it was only plowed but only to Oak Street, and from there south it was untouched and a bit too deep to ride.

Does anyone know if the city will plow the whole path before this evening?

I rode today. I rode our Long Tail cargo Bike the Yuba Mondo. This is a wonderful bicycle, it hauls our child, groceries, dry cleaning, and our fish around. One thing it is not good at is riding on snow. Having a long and ample tail, it likes to shake it’s booty when riding on packed or piled up snow. We did alright in the wet and slushy stuff, so when we got to the main streets (Augusta, Damen, and most of Webster) it was a good ride. I over dressed, so by the time I got to work the inside of my coat was a bit damp. I am looking forward to the ride home and I hope the bike lanes will have been cleared better. If the wet slushy stuff freezes it will be a problem. So think ahead when riding in the snow and enjoy the beauty.

That sucks...  maybe all the buildings which adjoin the DBL need a letter telling them not to do that.  (Is there a penalty for that?)

It would be nice if CDOT handed out letters, but I wouldn't count on it. I generally assume that when people do things like this (or drive/park in the bike lane), that they know what they are doing is wrong, but they just don't care. No amount of letters are going to stop them from continuing their behavior.

It would be nice if there was a fine for business that do this. Money can be a great motivator. :-)

When Critical Mass passed the theater (was it Decembe or January?)  there was an employee out calling  disparaging remarks about it at us.

I ended up riding through the snow Oak Street. It was a terrible idea the snow was deep and slick, but I was able to take it slow and make it through (fishtailing the whole way). I think i'm going to take an alternative way home. Be careful out there.

Adam, did you bother to read the previous thread about snow being shoveled into the Dearborn lane?

The one where you commented several times about how "not surprised" you were? Lee from Active Trans made a pretty definitive statement about CDOT's role in it.

I've successfully addressed the same problem in my own neghborhood by working through the responsible Alderman's office.
