Or even open training rides?

All my fast friends live in Wisconsin and none of the group rides I see/join ever seem to be all that speedy, and sometimes it's weird/unsafe to be that weird guy tacking onto the back of random people training on the lfp. It would be pretty wonderful to go out riding and get dropped or have to work hard to keep up.

The Chicago Cycling Club has training rides twice a week in the nicer months.  Monday nights are 'intro' rides 18-20mph focusing on how to ride in a paceline (usually two row rotating line).  Wednesday nights are the fast rides 25-28mph.  Both nights meet at the Dunkin' Donuts at Lincoln and California (just north of Bryn Mawr) at 6:30PM.

Keep an eye on http://chicagocyclingclub.org/Home/RideSchedule for when they start up again.

good to know.

how nice does the weather have to get for people to not be afeared of the cold?

and is there a particular route, or does it change every so-often?

Well, it's not so much the weather that determines when CCC training rides start up again but the sun and road conditions.  Gotta have decent sunlight and clean roads for safely being 6 inches off of the wheel in front of you.

There are a handful of routes that the rides do.  We go north out of the city.  I'm not sure if anyone's created any new routes for 2013.
