The Chainlink

Traffic 'round these parts dropped off pretty dramatically a few weeks ago... hard to tell from the "I rode today" thread who's still riding, as one would have to conclude that Gene is the only one out there most days by reading it....

Who's sticking it out and plans to continue to ride pretty much every day regardless of weather?

(Was winter 2013;   2014 starts on p. 36;   2015 starts on p. 61)

Ciclo Urbano should still have a supply (you may have to ask for them) otherwise ask around for them at Friday's mass or the Chainlink party afterwards.

This will be my first Chicago winter riding! Are there stickers? Where do I get one of them?

Took my dog to daycare and rode into work. This will be my first winter riding in Chicago so we'll see how well it works out. With enough clothing I think I'll be fine. Now the pooch...

This will be my first full year of biking through winter....and I'm attempting my first blog too!

Definitely biking all winter long.  Its certainly better than walking to the train and waiting in the cold.

I've actually been biking more these last few weeks in order to meet my yearly goal, keeping the thought that every mile I ride now is one I won't need to ride when its snowing or below freezing in late December.  Even though I still ride in sub-zero temps, I don't enjoy the long rides and end up choosing the shortest routes as the temp drops.

460 miles to go with 20 riding days left (due to travel).

I'm in for sure.

Paul Michael Ignacio makes a really good point about fenders!

I need to get cracking on the two speed project as my three speed is suffering from the dreaded Soma Fab Fender Syndrome (that is, the Soma Fab fender mounting system sucks and the parts are fragile and as a result, the rear is currently not mounted.)

Hey Alex, I'm not sure if you were serious here, but do you have a dog trailer? I do and took my dog on a ride Saturday with her coat on but still wondered if she was too cold in there - LMK if you think of ideas. I like that my trailer is super ventilated, but I worry it's too much cold air blowing in. Might have to winterize the thing. Usually just didn't use it in winter but - why not?

Oh and yes, this will be my... 8th? full-on bike winter. Love it. Are we still waving on Wednesdays, people?

Sarah, do tell!  Waving on Wednesdays?  My first winter, you know.

It's sort of a winter biking tradition, though as more bikers have appeared over the years, not as many know about it. And probably think I'm crazy. (So?)

I found this older post, though there may be more:

Also there's a two-ding Tuesday thing, too, but I can't work my bell as well in winter, plus sometimes I forget.

The bell is out.  I have all I can do to get to the brakes with the mittens or gloves.  But a royal wave is certainly possible ;-)

If I remember correctly it was pretty cold Saturday, and damn that would not sound like fun if I were a dog.  Even with a coat.  The thing about dogs is they are pro's at hiding pain and discomfort.  If you're not moving to create any heat energy and stuck in a drafty nylon box, that sounds like a bad time to me.  Don't take this the wrong way -- just something to keep in mind next time.   :)
