Hi all, It doesn't look like I'll be able to make it to the meeting after all.  I did some research online and found several of the same great images that others have posted.  The stickers in cab windows seems to be very popular in other cities.  Unfortunately, there was little info in the way of their results.

In Chicago, dooring crashes could be anywhere from 7% to 20% of bicycle crashes, depending on what year and how they are measured.  Of course we know that many bike crashes in general go unreported, and those "near miss" types of incidents that can be just as scary wouldn't be included in those numbers at all.  

In other cities, the following programs are common:

-Window stickers (especially in cabs)

-Videos/commercials (Chicago has some dooring-specific videos at Chicagobikes.org)

-Guerilla-style stencil painting on the bike lanes that say "door zone" or show where the edge of the door zone really is

-There are different styles of marking the parking lanes with hash marks to show the edge of the parking lane, but the lines extending out as far as the door zone goes to make it visible to cyclists.

Good call Laura - I was just thinking about cars on the side of the street since they are the ones we are targeting.  But street corner style can be an option as well.

Hi Aaron - I'm a little wary about putting flyers on cars/bikes, as it may be seen as unsolicited marketing.  I am okay with handing out flyers to people who are willing to take them.  Personally, I would like to do this along Halsted on the northside - it's where I most frequently get almost doored.

Hey Hey - I think discussion forum threads get passed over too easily so I'll re post here and see what the nets bring in.

We talked about this at our first meeting, but I dont remember what the responses were.  

Does anyone have a contact for where we can get our hands on some literature?

I would like to organize our first promotional event and am looking to get some of the following:

* Brochures

* Fliers

* Stickers

* Etc

I am thinking we can organize an event where we post it on the calendar and have it open to anyone who wants to attend.

We meet at a specific place and then spend an hour putting fliers under windshield wipers on a stretch of parallel parking and also stand on the nearest corners and hand out more info to passing cyclists.  The Six Corners of Damen, North and Milwaukee would be a great place to start this, but we could also pick other locals in the city where we would have a high amount of car, ped and bike traffic.

If anyone has a printing contact we could use this too and everyone pitch in $2-3 for a run of print.  With this option we could add Jerry's ideas on what to do if in a dooring crash and additional info.

Hi Katie - I think that the purpose (or mission) statement for our group should be summarized into one sentence.  Something like, "The purpose of (insert new name here) is to build awareness of the dangers of dooring and educate the public on how to diminish incidents."  We can use all of our facts and other information in longer flyers, but I think we should go short and sweet to get the point across.
