"With all the stolen bike posts lately (and no one thinking "I wonder if there's something under Useful Links for this."), I think it's well past time to make a sticky about the Stolen Bike Registry"

The fork in the Craigslist bike is different.  I think the Craigslist bike is a Cirrus Sport, where Brad's bike is a Cirrus Comp.

Juan is correct, that bike is not a Comp

Still... impressed with OLB or anyone who would check Craigslist for a member's bike.  Cheers!

Hell to the yeah. Thanks for the thoughts. Mucho appreciado (or something)

Is there any place to report a bike that I think is lost? That is, there's a bike that's been locked to an unsecure, out of the way spot for a number of weeks, and I'm thinking the owner just forgot where they left it. I guess it could be abandoned on purpose. It's a black Maruishi Road Ace 202 with those 80s style gear shifters on the down tube. I searched on the SBR and didn't see it listed.

Is there a place to see a report from the Stolen Bike Registry? I'm mainly interested in the data showing u-locks vs chains vs cables vs double u-locks. I didn't see anything like that on stolenbike.org. I'm kinda surprised there's not a "tips"  or reports page or something.

I remember seeing a post or topic like this on the chainlink in the past, but i can't seem to find it. It must be buried in there somewhere.

Kelvin,

Sorry abt the confusion. The CSBR is in kind of an in-between state at the moment; it's fully functional but there's no theme installed (hence the "new look" that's ironically garnished complements...) and we're planning to move to a slightly different format with a landing page and content such as you suggest ASAP, around which the new theme can be configured.

The old "stats" were disabled and not carried over as they were lacking in about 50 ways and resulted in more confusion than enlightenment.

I think you may be thinging of some info Kevin compiled by hand...  I don't have time to search for that at the moment unfortunately but there were separate threads.

What h said, plus:

Based on reports received and posted to the Chicago Stolen Bike Registry for April & May 2012:

Reported thefts:128 (+21% from 2011)

No Lock: 32

Cable Lock: 45

Newer U-Lock w/flat Key: 14 (-5% from 2011)

Security Chain: 2

Other: 34

Defeated Fence/Post: 13 (-3% from 2011)

Garage/Common Area: 52

Knows serial number: 48 (-4% from 2011)

Change in overall thefts reported could be due to weather, could be due to increased CSBR awareness, could be due to sun spots and crop circles. Stats on U-locks and defeated fences and sucker poles is encouraging, though the continued use of cable locks and thefts from garages, porches and common areas of oftentimes unlocked bikes is disappointing.

For the period of 4/1/11-10/31/11: 616 total reports to the CSBR
No Lock: 144 (23%)
Cable Lock: 227 (37%)
Newer U-Lock: 84 (14%)
Heavy Duty Bike Security Chain: 11 (2%)
Other: 150 (24%)
2 U-Locks: 2 (0.32%)

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys!

What draws my attention is that both bikes pictured have almost exactly the same seat post height and frame size. If the Jolly Green Dude that is selling it matches the bike then it most certainly is his. Not many guys could ride those bikes so he must be pretty darn tall to ride a non-compact 61cm frame AND have the seatpost that far extended.

Maybe the guy just wised up and and is parting out his toy single-speed in favor of his other grown-up bike with actual gears and brakes.   The coaster-brake Fauxie craze never really caught on here in Chicago.

Whole bikes sell for much less than the sum of their parts, especially when some of the parts (like nicer areospoke front wheels) are very high end compared to the rest of the bike and the frame is THAT BIG.  A giant-sized coaster-brake SS bike with a OK frame isn't going to attract many would-be buyers or fetch much more on CL than just a nice 700c aero wheel alone so I don't blame him for parting it out like he is. I'd list the frameset without the coaster brake wheel (or saddle, pedals & chain) and list those separately for maximum bang for the buck.

That's just my opinion, from someone who does a lot of buying and selling on CL.

Now that you pointed it out, I see your argument. I see what you mean.
