I was wondering if anyone here in Chicago has done a research or study on bad bike locking and recorded it on video.

There is this guy in SF that did it, walked around to all kinds of bikes and how they were locked and graded their locking skills.

I think if there is or one is done... a video of this made available to cyclers across chicagoland, would help decrease bike thievery just by our own doing.

Anyone have any knowledge of this?

Just saw this beautiful Jamis Aurora Elite locked with a cable!!  On the exact same rack where I had a bike stolen a few years ago.  I checked the Jamis website and this bike retails for $1700!!  The orange bit of Kryptonite lock you see in the photo is my bike lock.  I probably should have taken the photo before locking my bike.

I read on some of the earlier posts that there are some stickers we can put on poorly locked bikes to inform owners of their blunder.  Anyone know how I can go about getting a few of those in case I see this bike again???

Wow, that is a cool bike. I hope it doesn't get snatched!
I love when people will blow the big money on a bike, but cheap out on the lock.
It is a beautiful bike, albeit with terrible stock fenders, and I'd be nervous locking it with even the biggest u-lock.  A cable is just nuts.
I hope the person who steals it really loves the bike and gets some use out of it.

Horrible fenders indeed, just enough extra strut length to get caught on your shoes, that are getting soaked from all the deflected water.

Maybe it's a bike sting operation?

Rich,

Assuming you are still wherever you are parked, it would be cool to bring down a small note suggesting a better lock and stick it on the bike (maybe in the bottle cage) if it is still there.

Which brings up something for me. In the suburbs, I park my bike at the Metra rack. I love how secure my bike is because it is always next to a nice bike with a crappy cable lock. There are also bikes there double u-locked. Such a variety.
I read a story on CGOAB about a touring cyclist in New Orleans who wanted to check out this psychic who allegedly was suppose to be top of the line. This homeless guy outside said why are you locking your bike, I'll watch it for you.....and he AGREED?!?!?! You know what happens next, he comes out, bike is gone, homeless guy still there and he asks him I thought you were going to watch my bike and he sais...oh yeah I watched it, some guy came and took it.

No that guy who asked you for spare change won't REALLY watch your bike for you.

Hey Rich let us know if its still there!

Man, doesn't that just make you so mad? I feel like some people don't deserve nice things. Also, what about the bike shop that sold this guy a $1700 bike and a 5-cent cable lock?

My '09 Jamis Aurora Elite was stolen in December when a presumably pro bike thief sawed through my Kryptonite Evolution 4 with a portable angle grinder in broad daylight. Now I bring my new bike in the building (because I'm lucky enough to do so), and if I'm locking it up outside for more than 5 minutes I use two u-locks through the frame.

What's up with that uncut steerer tube?

The bike's gone!!  But looking around I don't see any shards of cable so hopefully the owner is riding in blissful ignorance of how easily their ride could've been snatched.  The rack is just outside a health club so maybe the owner was inside working out???  I had a posty note ready with a website the owner could visit with some bike locking tips.  The note was nice and polite even though it irritates the living junk out of me when people carelessly lock their bikes.

I didn't even notice the steerer tube sticking up.  That is odd ...
