Need details on that new law regarding motorists harrassing bicyclists. Tickets issued via mail...

Hoping someone can shed light on this situation. I have heard of the new law but am uncertain of the details.

Today on my commute home a man in his piece of S**T car X49 1777 plates ran me into the curb at the intersection of Halsted, Broadway, and the IHOP street. He tried to squeeze past me to beat the line of cars in the left lane going north bound on Halsted (then Broadway). It was a red light and I knocked on his window to inform of the three foot rule etc. He mocked me by saying "Yes maaaammm how can I help YOU?" Like I was asking for grey poupon mustard. He kept his eye on the light and not me. I said he almost clipped me. He waited for the light and sped off saying "almost, almost"

Next light, I pass in the bicycle lane. I know he is somewhere in the line of cars so VERY cautious to stay closer to parked cars. He passes and immediately swerves right in front of me with no obstacle to require him to do so. It was blatantly obvious is was geared at me.

Why the attitude on his part? Why the second swerve? Does this qualify for the bicycle harrassment law I mentioned above?

Just curious...however I know karma will take care of his sorry ass. Umph!

It's exchanges like this that make me want to mount a camera on my helmet.

I'm sorry to hear about the encounter, I've notice a lot of motorists acting more hostile during the cold weather. I was almost clipped 3 times in 1 commute last week.

Here's a link to the legislation.

I'm not sure without evidence or witnesses it is possibly for someone to get a ticket thought.

I agree. It's great that these codes are written but how do we as cyclists defend against acts like a bunch of us has encountered. Great, you get the plate #, GREAT I suffered no serious harm. Does it have to resort to physical harm to have anything done?

I can easily go slashing tires and throwing u locks around but I prefer to remain on the good side of the law.

Maybe some of our lawyer friends can shed light on this situation.

I usually try to take up more space when I know people will try to pass traffic on the right. Then to really piss them of I slow down a lot to the point that it would have been faster to stay in line.
I wanted to do this but he had me pinned between his car and a snow drift ;-(

That sux be safe out there
My gut feeling is feel free to call him in at the time and claim he's driving around like a drunk. He was swerving right in front of you.

I feel so bad for you. I feel sorry for this jackhole. The new legislation is great in theory, but I just do not see it ever being enforced. I have read in numerous cycling publications that in states that have had laws similar to our new laws...they are never enforced. The only way a cop will issue a citation on a driver is if he sees it happen. There have even been cases where cyclists have been hit (and killed) by drivers and the 3 foot violation is not cited. Now in these cases the motorist has had to be closer than 3 feet, right???

These laws can only really raise awareness I guess. Mr Almost will get his own if he keeps driving like that, unfortunately he may end up taking some of us with him.
