Gmail is finally rolling out an option to turn off the threaded view and choose to view your messages sequentially by arrival time.
Gmail users, please consider switching to this option, especially if you've made the unfortunate choice to use gmail for professional and business purposes.
Too many of you habitually miss communication because it pops into a thread that is no longer catching your attention.

The rollout has yet to roll to me.
This is awesome news. My company made the switch to gMail and I can't stand it. I still open everything within Apple Mail. I can keep my inbox much cleaner, file away individual emails instead of a thread, don't worry about forwarding something I don't want to. I wonder when this will be rolled out to us!
And here I was expecting to get reamed . . . I'll try to hold the "brace" position a while longer . . .
Iiiiiittttssssss heeeeere.

I have several gmail accounts set to POP (or is it IMAP these days) into my fastmail and ultimately my Thunderbird . . . never have to deal with the threaded view that way either.
Thanks for the tip Howard. It rolled out to me and I made the switch instantly!
i havent noticed anything diff on my gmail yet. is it automatic, do i need to adjust settings?
booyah.. ok...if i actually read the instructions, that would help. got it now.
Who. Are. You. People ??

Why would you prefer non-threaded emails? Honestly, I feel like my whole life changed for the better when I started using Gmail. Then, when my office used Outlook, I felt overwhelmed by the volume of "Re: blahblahblah" emails. (I know you can sort by conversation in Outlook - for some reason, the visual effect of Outlook sorting is clunky and gross-looking to me.)

Also, I think the rollout actually takes several days, and you probably have to change your own settings - it won't happen automatically. Likely due to the very slim minority of Gmail users who would ever prefer such a thing :)
I agree. For listservs, I definitely PREFER threaded e-mails. Unread messages still show as unread. It's much easier to stay current on topics of interest and delete topics that are not of interest. My overflowing IN box is much more manageable WITH threaded e-mails.

I know both of you guys well and I don't think either of you are typical, i.e. you're meticulous or fastidious enough (I've never used fastidious and don't have time to look it up- fingers crossed that it's only got positive connotations) that you would be dilligent about monitoring all of your threads for new additions.
