The Chainlink

About this debate we seem to constantly get into about the Mass being this or that... It doesn't matter at all, it's all cock rock, as they say. We can whine, stomp our feet and yell as loud as we can but no matter how important we think our ideas on what the mass is it still just doesn't matter. Not a single one of us is more right or wrong than the other and we certainly don't have any more authority than the average rider. No matter how hard we try to influence the Mass with own our agenda it'll still keep on keepin' on. Whatever influence we have is fleeting.

But if we are going to continue to snipe at each other can we at least keep it in here, in "The Ring?"

Glad to see you're against censorship ;-)

What we are attempting here is similar to making sausage.
We gag at the smell on the farm.
We puke at the slaughter house.
We are appalled at the sausage factory methods.
But somehow after it is smoked, aged, and wrapped up with a nice paper label: It is not too bad.

I think there is way too many post by some people.
I propose we set some kind guidelines.
Some thing like only 1 post per forum per day.
More than that turns into mindless chatter or may look like petty bickering.
I have seen some use their barrage of post in a few minutes as their form of CENSORSHIP.
They just try to "bury" the different point of view by moving it back so many pages out of sight.

This is a joke, right?

I mean if you are proposing the prevention of censorship by limiting what people can say you have to be joking...
Yeah but there is something to his point. Instead of having a Mod control how many times we say something we could have a gentlemen's agreement. Self censorship out of respect for the main thread. Thats why I made the "THE RING!" so that we had a place to just lay into whatever ugly topic we want to get into. It doesn't seem like it'll be used that way but I was hoping it would.
These threads rarely get noticed and in some cases negative stuff needs to be seen by all.

I do agree that here is a good spot to put some of the personal issues.
Spencer, what happened to your little "Ring" discussion and keeping "snipes" over there? It would be really great to have a dialogue instead of endless pot shots. Who exactly was the "grandfather" crack aimed at?

Speaking of snipes, "PDA posse?" :P You know now I am going to make a T-Shirt which reads "Official Critical Mass PDA Posse."

Nah it wasn't aimed at anyone specific because EVERYONE says this. And not just the cats in the CCM thread. For example my friends in the Chicago thrash/power-violence scene who were rockin it in the 90's. They complain that Chicago punk just isn't what it used to be or isn't fun anymore. And yeah Powerviolence doesn't exist anymore and their bands have broken up but that doesn't mean "punk is dead." It's just jaded nonsense. Chicago Punk is freakin' great today but just different and Critical Mass is absolutely as fun, for me, as it was when I first accidentally ran into the Mass. Hell, I would argue it's only gotten better. Well... The cop escort thing annoys me but other than that, better!

So back to the original point, when I hear people say things like that, I remember my Grandfather railing against kids today.
OK, I'm sorry if I thought that was directed in my direction.
I think "kids these days" are fine and as it seems the majority of riders are teens and tweens it would be nice to see some leadership and stewardship arise from 'their' ranks.
We need to leave space for that to happen.

Just curious-- are you posting from a PDA? I have to wonder why you limit your self to short cryptic posts that are apparently so open to misinterpretation. Just an extra sentence or two might move your post from the "snipe" to the "dialogue" category. They're not charging by the word here.

Yeah most of the time I am posting from my phone and the Chainlink is terrible with phones.
That's good to know. Sorry to bring up the PDA again but i've been trying to understand why dialogue/debate has fallen so thoroughly out of favor. I wouldn't say handheld devices are a huge factor, but they're certainly 'a' factor.
Hopefully some future technology will improve things and it will be easier to just stream one's thoughts into text. Strange that voice recognition (for example) is not further along and more widely adopted-- I think the technology has been there for 10+ years. MacOS had it built in back in the 90s, and I understand Windows 7 just got it (congrats and welcome to the 90s M$!)
It would make riding the bus much more interesting :-) And texting from a moving bike could be hands-free (not something I absolutely need in my life, but I get more and more text messages from people who know I'm on my way to wherever they are by bike . . .)

rik:
I did not use "prevention" and I was referring to a merely stated common "Netiquette" courtesy.
It sure looks like a mini Filibuster, when one person replies many times to their OWN post.
What ever happened to taking turns? some post many times in a row. These things just happen in the flow. It is not always nefarious.

I am in 100% agreement on that one

"gentlemen" are tooo unreliable; maybe more of "people's agreement".

Thanks to all those who bother to help out with "the heavy lifting"
Carry on.
H, you are engaged in slander.

In it's entirety, my only communication with Tony in a month:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sent Mar 17
I've only got a second, so expect no reply for days, but gotta mention
1. Devon, there's specific anti-war reasons to do. We might as well do it on an NSCM, since its up our way anyway. I talked with Todd Allen briefly about it, sounded logical.
2. Be careful arguing with Howard. Its absolutely always pointless and painful.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

#2 was specifically regarding the fact that H was pushing for Southbound, and I didn't want (my friend) Tony to be too hurt if we didn't go North. The fact that H eventually did lead us North, and distributed a map, after weeks of pushing for south and no maps makers, is profoundly twisted.

Doug, what you did Friday was assault. And on the Ghandi ride no less.

I will no longer attend CCM when either of you are present.

Expect no direct reply on the tirade I can assume will follow. With every post, all you two prove, is that you are enormous bullies.
So, I saw this discussion...

I'm not really sure what Doug did on Friday...I saw him a few times during the ride. THe only thing I wish he had done was mention going to Relax earlier so that we could have taken the ride that way.

Also, I don't believe that Howard led the ride north. Unless I'm experiencing delusions of grandeur, I'm rather certain that I was in front for a good part of the way. Howard was nearby and made some route suggestions, but it seemed like he wasn't there so much.

And all of you are rather pleasant offline...your internet personas really seem to clash here. And, as someone who isn't super involved in the critical mass movement (i'm actually really on the fence about the whole thing), I am rather intimidated to do critical mass things since there does seem to be such a tradition and pressure to do things "right."

Hope that makes sense. I won't be on the ride next month, so I'll have to see if I can make the May Mass.
Jami, you were a real star on Friday's ride! I never thought we'd make it to Devon and frankly I'm surprised we made it as far north as we did, and in such a tight group (after we ditched the cowboys for the second month straight :-) ) Nice work.
