The Chainlink

this past friday night i took a spill on ravenswood.  i suppose i was a bit anxious to have such sweet winds with me from the north that i wasn't looking for any slick spots.  long story short, i hit the pavement and as did my head but i had a helmet on. the helmet doesn't have a crack in it, there are scuff marks and what not, but my question is, being a never "impacted" helmet from giro, do i really need to replace it, even without a physical crack in the helmet?  also on the same note, is there any cheap insurance that urban bikers use that im completely unaware of?  waking up. thanks.

Take it into a bike shop, and have them take a look at it. From the sound of it, the helmet is probably fine, but it wouldn't hurt to have another set of eyes look at it.
several years ago,I took a spill on Lilly Rd. in the Village of Menominee Falls, northwest of Milwaukee. My rear wheel clipped the edge of a pothole and I and my bike went down. The next day, after I returned from visiting my friends in Richfield, I stopped in at Rainbow Jersey in Shorewood and got a new Bell helmet. The old Bell was broken near the tail. If certainly did its job.
ALWAYS replace a helmet after a crash. Once the cells in the styrofoam are compressed they are useless. You can insure your bikes on your home owners/apartment insurance pretty cheap. I have some very expensive bikes and it only cost me $80 a yr to add em on.
Giro's website has some good info to check out.

Customers outside the U.S. should call (800) 456-2355 or e-mail us for information on the crash replacement program applicable to them. Remember: NEVER wear a helmet that’s been involved in an accident."
Rule of thumb I go by is that when a helmet hits the floor it is done for. An $80 bucket is pretty much disposable after a crash whether it is cracked or not...It is just something that I would neve want to gamble...
