Joe, thanks for the suggestion about liner gloves!
AR, I use ski goggles I got from REI 2 years ago. They're made to wear w/a helmet, don't fog up and I can wear them over my glasses. With the goggles and a balaclava, none of my face touches the naked air. I don't think they carry them anymore but I know I bought the cheapest pair and they work really well.

What goggles do you all recommend? The area around my eyes, between my glasses and balaclava, is just freezing...

I wear a pair of thin liner gloves under the lobsters. They are great when I have to take the lobsters off to lock my bike, or otherwise do something that takes some dexterity.

They also seem to enhance / moderate the temperature of my hands, so that my fingers stay warm but my hands don't get sweaty. The liners seem to eliminate (or at least minimize) the problem of the lobsters being wet on the inside from sweaty hands.

I've found that if my hands or fingers are cold going into the lobster gloves, they'll stay cold unless I make my fingers share the internal compartments. Another reason why I carry a pair of lighter gloves. I wear these to lock and unlock my bike, get stuff off my back rack, etc. (that's how my hands got cold before going into the claws). I've found it near impossible to accomplish that stuff wearing the lobsters. PI is exactly the brand I had.

I guess I should try the lobster claws again. I tried some PI brand ones a few years ago and my hands froze! (faulty pair?) That's when I went with REI mitts and started riding a mountain bike (flat bar).

I was in full gear today, goggles, balaclava, hooded shirt, sweater, jacket, silk long johns, jeans, awesome winter overpants, smartwool socks, LLBean boots and lobster claw gloves. I was biking SW on Archer for about an hour and if the wind had a face I'd have punched it. Instead just swore a blue streak and sweat through most of my layers trying to get to work on time. I do love my lobster claw gloves but my hands get so warm in them they're usually wet on the inside when I get where I'm going. Then if they don't have time to dry out by the time I leave, bad news. I've started switching into a pair of lighter gloves once the claws start heating up. Cause what I really need is MORE gear to keep track of.

Call me crazy, but, although I'm unemployed, I'm thinking of doing a daily commute just so I can post legitimately here.

Actually, I'm thinking about putting together a trike website. So, I can commute daily to APL (Appleton Public Library), and do some writing for the site there. I'll consider this my daily commute.

Thank goodness that it's only 1. 5 miles.

Today I wore a wool hat, snowboarding goggles, face mask, wool t-shirt, 2 wool midweight base layers, unlined patagonia softshell jacket, unlined softshell vest over the jacket, Ibex wool-lined softshell pants, heavyweight smartwool socks with lightweight patagonia wool sock liners, keen winter boots, and lobster gloves with wool glove liners. Torso was a bit too hot (could have lost the vest), feet were a tad too cold (probably no solution here unless I get warmer boots), and head, hands and legs were just right.

All in all not too bad today considering how wet the roads were before the freeze last night. The ibex wool-lined softshell pants have been the best investment ever. Work well from 30 to 0 with nothing else under them.
