The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

Small victories. Hopefully.

Back in June I filed two taxi complaints (w/ photos and video). One was for a driver who stopped in the double-green bike lanes on Dearborn near Lake St. The other was for a driver who made an illegal right turn from the center lane on Franklin, blocking the bike lane. The two hearings were scheduled for this morning. Neither driver showed up, so the administrative judge enter a judgment against both drivers. I spoke with the city lawyer, and both will have to attend an 8 hour class. The driver who stopped in the bike lane will be fined $100. The driver making the illegal turn will be fined $400.

It's possible that the drivers will show up late and file a motion to have the judgment reversed. The city lawyer said that she would contact me if they're given a new hearing date.

I don't know why the city didn't seek a $300 fine for the driver stopping in the bike lane, as the law was amended some time back to increase the fine for the central business district.

Anyway, I'm happy that the two drivers will pay with time and money. I picked these two dolts out because their actions went beyond the usual antics.
