Newschatter: Chicago local news sources are revealing that an unnamed Alderman will recommend a proposal to license bicycles at tomorrow's budget address meeting.

"The proposed licensing would bring in $3.5 to $7 million with a one-time registration fee of $5 or $10 from the city's estimated 705,000 bicycles."

Bicycle licensing is a terrible idea.  First, the cost would discourage many for whom biking for is a cheap and accessible transportation option.  What about families with children?  Would they have to buy a license for each family member?  That could get expensive to the point where many just say, forget it.  Secondly, from everything I've read over the years, the fees would bring in just enough to cover the cost to administer the licensing and registration program.  There would be little to nothing left to use to pay for things like infrastructure change that may encourage cycling.

The bottom line is that more people on bikes, makes biking safer.  Requiring a license and registration would throw up just another barrier for those wanting to ride.

So if I cough up $10, the city will start caring about my safety and treat me like a legitimate user of the road?

Take my money, please.

...and they have a water tower to sell you, too.

I absolutely agree, and the last thing we need is more barriers. We need more people on bikes, and fewer people in cars.
